Here are some pics of our new project. We are converting what was built as Spartanburg Waterworks in 1922 into a state of the art home. We are making an effort to follow as EarthCraft, Energy Star and LEED standards on this project. I hope you enjoy whatching the progress.

I love pictures, but do not have a broadband connection. If you could adjust the picts size down it would be apreciated!
sorry I'll try to repost smaller.
here is another try, hope it works!
Looks like a fun project - I'm trying to get a sense of what street it's on - I was a Co-op engineer at the then-Hoechst Fibers in 1982-86.
Was a pretty fun town, I thought.

The job is on the corner of main and spring streets smack dab in morgan square.
Ah - Spring - that's the one.

Here are a few progress pics, we are still working on interior demo and window openings. Unfortunately I still don't have a final set of plans so not a lot to show but I wanted to keep the thread alive.
Does anyone know how to post pics in an already opened format so you don't have to click on each file?

Yes those are the mock ups for different areas, I have allowed as much time to do the trim on this job as I have to build small houses!
I normally resize eveything to 480x640, kind of a camera standard sizing when saving to a jpeg. Usually comes out between 35K and 100K.

Posting pictures as .jpg should allow you to post reasonable quality pictures with a tenth of the file size which will make dial-up viewers happier and allow you to post ten times as many pictures before you hit your storage limit. I believe you will hit your storage limit after about 100 pictures of the size you posted.

Interesting project. What exactly are you doing to satisfy EnergyStar and LEEDS requirements? And, how are you getting away with the shorts?<G>http://www.tvwsolar.com

We are not necessarily trying to satisfy requirements as much as we are trying to use them as a guide to be responsible without being fanatical.
1. Spray foam insulation building envelope.<!----><!----><!---->
2. High efficiency windows.<!----><!---->
3. Use of engineered framing materials.<!----><!---->
4. Use of low VOC adhesives, carpets and paints.<!----><!---->
5. Use of engineered stone flooring.<!----><!---->
6. Use of long lasting materials to promote sustainability.<!----><!---->
7. Planting of trees, shrubs and other plants to create large greenspace.<!----><!---->
8. High efficiency water heater.<!----><!---->
9. Efficient plumbing fixtures throughout.<!----><!---->
10.Installation of energy star appliances
11.Cabinetry and countertops are urea – formaldehyde free.<!----><!---->
12. Recycling of construction waste.<!----><!---->
13. Reuse of large majority of existing framing.<!----><!---->
Sorry for the font change, I cut and pasted from another document. As far as the shorts, I have never had an issue on a residential job.
Sounds like a good plan. Will the spray foam go right to the brick? Open or closed cell? I'm assuming the windows will be custom, what kind are you going with? We have been visited by OSHA on high profile residential jobs, and we were asked not to wear shorts... well, unless they were under something longer.http://www.tvwsolar.com

Yeah man this is the Mayor's res so hopefully that won't mean I get my first ever visit from OSHA. As far as the foam goes it will go right to the masonry with closed cell on all exterior walls and open cell as sound barrier for theatre, elevator, plumbing etc.
Thanks for the smaller picts!
As far as shorts, that must be a state osha thing or our local osha hasn't read the book. Everybody wears shorts around here as soon as we can!!
If I was an osha guy, and I asked someone to not wear shorts, I think I'd immediately go jump off a tall building and put myself out of my misery.

OSHA is, but many states have their own that enforce the fed laws. I have noticed that states go further than the feds.
If you were an OSHA guy, you'd have your head so far up your adze you wouldn't be able to read the posts on Breaktime.

No union here thank God, you can still make a decent wage for providing resonably priced projects. If I am unhappy with something at work I go to the source MYSELF if that doesn't work I get another job and the government is the only entity wasting my hard earned money.

how wide are the stringers? they appear to be only about 3/4
That's right they are actually laminated around mock up walls so after the glue sets it retains it's shape and is incredibly strong.
I have to give a plug to my friends at Heirloom stair and iron they made templates for me in the demolition phase so I could layout my walls and cut out the existing floor structure, they also made the template for the skirt beam under the landing. If any one is in the market for stairs or wrought iron in the upstate area of SC I highly recommend these guys, they are the best!
Great work. Thanx for sharing.Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood

Thanks for taking the time to post this job. Those stairs will be elegant.Couple of Q's.Was any consideration given to use metal studs?I know it will be a residence but are they going to sprinkle it?How many amp service? Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
At first I considered steel studs but then thought the flexibility of using wood was better suited given all the oddball stuff going on in the exterior walls.
I am not sure about sprinkling still waiting for HO to make that call.
The service will be 400A 3ph 120/208.

Zach,That is some very nice framing.
It is good to see that quality work is still being done. What thickness rock will you use?Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
Thanks man, we will use 5/8 on all walls and ceilings and 2 layers of 1/2 on barrel hall and the curve in DR ceiling. I am just glad I have found a niche in the industry that demands good work instead of a cheap fast turnover.
great pics.
great job.
thanks.Amateurs talk strategy, Generals talk logistics.
I like it man, I'm curious as to how you frame in the corners of the barrel.
I will post pics on monday, but basically I took a rectangle (rise x run) of 1/4 plywood and put it where the hip belongs and used a 4' level and a pencil and ran the level across the curve perpendicular to the rafters to draw the hip on the plywood. I then cut 2 pieces of 3/4 plywood with opposing bevels glued and screwed them together and so far 4 of 8 are near perfect.
Cool I was thinking about how I would tackle it, and the only thing I came up with is hold a piece up there and straight edge across the ones already in and mark it in several places, connect the dots.
Pretty close to what you came up with i think.
Um, you *really* need to downsize those pictures if you are going to embed them.
And make the file a .jpg
I have DSL and it still took a while.
This isn't a progress pic in fact it is the opposite! How many city workers does it take to change a light bulb apparently this many, these guys are changing 1 christmas decoration bulb, tax dollars at work Ha!
