Does anyone know what type of insulation was used about 70-90 years ago in a ceiling cavity below a flat roof? Before I open my ceiling I would like to know what might be up there and how to prepare to remove everything.

Listeners write in about removing masonry chimneys and ask about blocked ridge vents, deal-breakers with fixer-uppers, and flashing ledgers that are spaced from the wall.

My friend next door has a similiar year build and he had a dirty white cotton like material. He just covered over the ceiling and left it alone. If I find that should I do the same and what the heck is it?
i've seen saw dust, newspaper, underwear just to list a few. basically whatever was readily availiable.
Just about anything -- cotton, straw, newspaper, etc. Vermiculite and rock wool were two common commercial products.
Sawdust, vermiculite, perlite, diatomaceous earth, newspaper, rock wool (maybe, I'm not sure about the date of that stuff), or nothing at all. You'll just have to look.
