Are these old ladder jacks still–or were they ever–a good tool?
Or should I be looking at the Werner et. al. newer aluminum style?
Thanks.

I would get the newer aluminum style.
I had a pair of the metal ones and they are a pain to put on/off and not too easy to adjust either.
I got them used at a swap meet for $20, and after I bought some aluminum ones, sold them for $20 at another swap meet.
Don't even think about getting those old steel ones. They pinch fingers with great relish.
Difficult if not impossible to use anything besides plank --like 5" deep alum. deck.
can't go over the top like the open alum. must slide in in each direction.
You beat me to it. I'll second the pinching hazard and there's nothing like pushing one of the ladders over when you're trying to slide a heavy wood plank into one. I wouldn't pay fifty cents for a pair if they came with a free case of beer.View Image
I thought you were busy hooking up that webcam !!
I just got a router for the house that enables my wireless modem to be attached to it then broadcast throughtout the house.
They're pricey though $260
That better be a fast router!
Mine here was maybe 80 bucks at Office Depot or such..it is a Linksys at 54.0Mbps.
I third the comments on the jacks, man they suck.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

Thank you all--exactly what I needed to know!
" I wouldn't pay fifty cents for a pair if they came with a free case of beer."You recycle the steel. Then you have less than 50 cents in a case of beer.Don't you liberals know anything about business?.
.
A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
