I would like to install 1/4″ drywall over a textured ceiling “popcorn”. the ceiling is lathe and plaster. Is this possible without having to scrape it off first ? I want to screw in the drywall using long enough screws to go through the plaster and lathe and into the ceiling joists. I will also adhere to strict srcew schedule codes for drywall ceilings. Thanks.

If that texture is rough, you will probably find that the 1/4" will be wavy. I would think that sticking with 1/2" would be best as it would help keep things more even.

Oh, good Lord, no. But I can give him two dollars and an assault rifle.
Thanks for your suggestion, I hate using 1/4" for the reason of screws popping. I will use 1/2". The finished product of it beeing flat is crucial. I would hate to be branded with "I do it right cause I do it twice". HA . What about firring strips? How important is it and what should I look for to see if I need to do this or not? THANKS.
I seems like there is already a lot of weight on those ceiling joists, what size are they? The extra layer of 1/2" may just bring it all down.
Something to consider. Mike
Trust in God, but row away from the rocks.
I'd scrape it down. If the plaster is any good, I'd just paint it, no drywall. If you put drywall up with the popcorn on, it will be a whale of a lot more work, you'll have waviness, and the screws will tend to bust through because there is no solid backing. Never put 1/4 on a ceiling either.
If you really don't want to scrape it, put strapping up and use at least 1/2 drywall.
Scrape it first. If the ceiling hasn't been painted, scraping is a lot easier. Spray the ceiling in small areas, give it a few minutes, then use a 4-6" taping knife to remove it.
If the ceiling has been painted and you still want new dw, scrape 2" swaths along the existing joists and install firring. Screw new dw to the firring.
Use 1/2" minimum on ceilings.
