Since this has come up a few times here recently, thought I’d share my current project. It was an old squeaky staircase. Now it’s like a rock and looks better too. I’d guess it cost about $200.00 in materials, but took too much time.

I am so glad you posted that.
Thanks Jon
Rez,
Thanks. Just finished laying down the fifth coat of polyurethane. Wife's in CA right now and all but one cat is outside. Hopefully they can all last two more hours without a litter box (don't want any cat paw prints) LOL.

What a job! That's some good lookin work.
I love to see quality work. Great job. I have some questions. We recently added on and I am going to redo our carpeted stairs with oak. I see that you used plywood. Will that hold up well under children? Their bedrooms are upstairs. I was going to take off the 2x10 treads and put the 1 inch thick oak treads on.
Your patterns were very interesting. How did you fasten that small stuff together?
James Hart

Nextlevel,
Probably not, which is why I'm aiming to put about 7 coats total of polyurethane on the treads. Original plan was to have a carpet runner, but right now, I'll leave them be, as they turned out better than expected.
If I had to do it all over again, I'd use 1/2" solid plained stock. Just seemed like a PITA at the start of the project. But for the extra few hours to mill it down, it would have been worth it in retrospect.

Used an 18 gauge brad nailer/staple gun for most of it, plus lots of glue. Nails into the studs where I could find 'um.

My set of stairs looks like yours except for the landing. I think I will go ahead and take the 2x10 off and put 1 inch thick oak treads on. But I do think I will put 34 oak plywood on the backs.
You did a great job. I have a tremendous appreciation for quality work. Thanks for the pictures.

Pretty work, Jon...and I think you get the prize for the farthest out of the box methods for making the parts fit. And you said you're not a pattern maker<G> Don't worry, we can fix that later!

Bill,
That's not how every one else does it???? I'm mentally cringing at some of the ways some folks might.
