O.k., for the most part ( or for the all part) I know that Ryobi pretty much equals crap, or is more a DIY or home owner level of tool. But what do you folks think of the older Ryobi tools ( lets say those made 13 – 15 years ago or more).
More specifically has anyone had any experience/ thougths on the 10″ thickness planer ( model AP-10). A guy I know has the 10″ thickness planer that I could buy. Im thinking of it for a job site planer ( for trim and such), much easier to haul around than the Dewalt that we have used. I used a Ryobi planer that someone had on a job a year or so ago and it seemed to work o.k.
It seems some of their older stuff was o.k. One guy that Ive worked with has their 3 1/4″ planer ( must be about 15 yrs old), seems o.k., similiar to the makita. It has a nice long bed. About 12 years ago I bought my dad a Ryobi 7 1/4″ saw that was pretty comparable to my Milwaukee saw.

I used one for woodworking for 6-8 years, finally replaced it with a Ridgid. Worked well. I replaced it because of the 10" width...at the time I had a need for wider on a particular project and thus justified the expense. Snipe was a tad bit much, but controllable. Had the blades sharpened twice or so, no real problems getting them re-installed correctly. If the price is right, it would be a good traveling planer, although it's still not light.
ryobi has built a useable tool once in a while but I'm not so sure about the Planer. I used on in 1989 a few times. It was the joke of the job site.
Try before buy is not a bad idea

I have to agree with Elcid72. I've had an AP10 that I bought around'87 or '88 I think. It's not an everyday tool for me but it has never let me down. The 10" width has limited me from time to time and yes, snipe is sometimes more than I'd hope to see. It is a bit heavy but generally I'd rather have a heavy tool than a light weight one. Anyway, I got it brand new for around $100 from the girlfriend of a guy who was heading to the pokey! He was already "out of town" and told her she could sell off some of his tools as he wasn't going to need them for a while. I offered $100 & she said "sure". Done deal!

I have an AP12 planer. No problems, but can't compare it to others since it's the only one I have used. The thing is heavy, and the handle hurts my hand if I carry it, so I usually carry it 2 handed by the frame.
Thanks for the input guys ( and/or gals). Ive shot some wood through it and it seems to work o.k., no real snipe problem. The one that I used a year or so back didnt seem to have much of a snipe problem either.
Only being able to plane 10" ( as opposed to the 12", 12.5, 13" common now) could be limiting, but then just find a larger one ( companies, someone else'). With Murphy's law, as soon as I would buy it, Ill need to plane something wider than 10".
I think the 10" Ryobi is light for a planer ( but not light). The Dewalt 12 1/2" ( only other planer really have experience with) is a beast to move by yourself, especially up stairs.
Thanxs,
