My wife and I will be moving to the Omaha, NE area in the next few weeks. I have been working as a carpenter for the last few years and would like to continue carpentry work. Ideally, I would like to work for a small to mid-sized remodeling firm, but any residential carpentry will make me happy. Here’s my sales pitch:
I have great references from my previous employers, including a mid-sized residential/commercial remodeler where I was a lead for one of their three crews. I am currently working as a construction manager for a Habitat for Humanity affiliate. I am solely responsible for construction of the homes including coordinating subs, material procurement, and working with volunteers on the site.
I show up on time every day so you wont have to wonder about me. I have a great attitude and sense of humor so I’m easy to work with. I can work and communicate with customers so jobs go smoother. I am (usually) presentable so I won’t scare customers. I have a good well rounded skill set so I can get the work done. Finally, I have a reliable truck with topper and am fairly well stocked with tools.
I would like to find an employer who will appreciate good, dependable help. Someone who can trust an employee and not feel the need to always look over their shoulder.
Thanks,
Mark

Well, as long as there's building going on in Nebraska, you shouldn't have any problem finding a job. You sound like the employee every contractor dreams of....lol.
What's got you heading to Omaha?

My wife is just about to finish her PhD and she will be starting a new job there. When we talked about her getting her degree, I agreed to support her until she got done. Her plan was to be making so much money we would be burning it to heat the mansion. My plan was to sit around all day in my underwear drinking beer, smoking expensive cigars and playing video games. Oh well.

Sorry to tell you Mark- I took your dream job- the underwear and cigar gig. If y'all would like, I can post a picture of me in my skivies with a stogie to prove it...lol

Bummer! That must be how you got the new Magnum with 22's. I won't speak for everyone else here, but I will pass on the pics of you.

Any chance I could convince you to move to Long Island, NY?? LOL
I won't move to NY, but if you provide the Leer jet, I will be happy to commute. And I want two bags of peanuts and a full can of coke instead of the quarter cup they usually give you.

Well Mark I'm a stone's throw down the road in Lincoln and have good connections with both the Lincoln and Omaha Builders Assn's. I'm actually having coffee in the am with one of the guys who is on the board of MOBA. If you still get this tonight, email me with a handful more specifics on what you'd really want and what you can really deliver - it will help me find some places to send you hunting. And yeah, there's just a little building going on here. Omaha is almost exploding. If all else fails, I can at least help steer you around Omaha a little - places you might and might not want to live.

I appreciate your help! My ideal job would be working in remodeling. I like the variety of the work and the challenge of making things look like they have always been there. If I were to work in new construction and specialize in either framing or trim, it would be a toss up. I feel like I'm more skilled and a little more efficient framing, but trim is a little more challenging with a better working environment (usually).
As far as what I can deliver...I will be the first to tell you that don't know it all and I can't do it all. I'm not super fast at anything and don't want to be if I have to compromise quality.
I am fairly decent at framing walls and floors and can move at a good pace, but have not had the chance to do any complicated roof cutting by hand. The vast majority of work done around here is trusses. I can cut simple rafters, but would be slow cutting hips or structural valleys without the guidance of seasoned roof framer.
I am able to give you tight miters and good looking trim work. I am reasonable efficient hanging doors and cabinets. Would I be able to trim a house myself in a week? Definitely no.
I have done enough drywall and roofing to know that it is usually cheaper to have the professionals do it. Although I would like to have a chance to try this new D-mix method.
If you need it, my cell phone number is 217-621-0942 or you can email me through breaktime if you prefer.
Thanks again,
Mark
