I’m re-siding a doghouse dormers with cement lap siding. Roof will be done at the same time. I’m wondering about the open ends of the siding where they meet the slopped roof. There’s noth to close these ends like the corner boards at the other end. Won’t open ends be an invitation for trouble (water, criters)? I can’t find any literature that addresses this. is there a special flashing, filling or caulking techique for this?

You're no coward............
this is what I'd do.
Roof and step flash. Don't forget kickout flashing at the bottom of dormer/corner board.
Counter Flash the steps.
Follow cement board guidelines-I think Hardie has some for dormer/roof intersects. At any rate-leave the siding up 2" and if you can-use a colored counterflash.
The kickout is important-many problems occur down on the bottom of dormers-new construction or reno.
Best of luck.
Leave at least an inch clearance (the mfgr probably specs 2") and prime/paint the edges before installing.
Lap Siding
After the roofing/step flashing has been installed, put a 2" wide trim board, matching the corner boards, 1" above the shingles. Lay your angle cuts of siding on top, caulk, paint and go.
