I plan on doing a complete tearoff on my roof this summer. The current decking is 1/2″ thick by 4″ boards – really old. Some are pretty bad from past leaks and carpenter ant damage. I have some 7/16″ OSB left over from a previous project and was thinking about using this to replace the bad sections. Is this a bad idea? Can’t say I remember seeing OSB for roof decking anywhere. I would like to save the money but don’t want to be stupid and end up paying later.

what you want to do is routine now in a lot of places....
but...
is it allowed in your locale...
is the OSB you have decking rated..
what is the spacing of your rafters... 24 Oc is really pushing ir for OSB..
are you sure the current decking is 1/2" and not 3/4...
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming
WOW!!! What a Ride!
Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!
If your rafter spacing is 16" o.c. you can use it. Leave a space at the seams with an 8d nail. You could use H clips or nail 2x3's between rafters for cats. I still do it this way,I'm old school.
