Anyone see a problem with me using 3/4inch t&g on my ceiling in the shop? Rafters are 24 oc. it would keep me from having to fur out. Plus 3/4osb’s only 10 bucks a sheet. Will painting keep the smell down too?
Thanks ladies & gentlemen
p.s. ceiling is vaulted

you mean as a floor for the attic space above?
That would be fine, but to use 3/4" x 4' x 8' T&G OSB on a ceiling would take about four guys to install it, IMO

No worse than drywall. Use a DW lift or T sticks.Of course, it's not fire rated like DW.

I have never seen T&G drywall

No, but the OSB can easily be made into non-T&G.

yeah...but why? drywall is lighter, cheaper, easier, and more common.Justin Fink - FHB Editorial

You'd have to ask the OP about that.

"yeah...but why"Because Dan and I have been exercising our mental muscles to wake up by having some sort of little arguement every morning like a chess game. I'm getting to look forward to seeing his responses almost as much as my coffee...;)

On the ceiling!!! I'll use a DW lift. Drywall we be to flimsy. or do I need a fire rating
-Lou
Lou,If your shop is in a detached garage, and a "hobby" shop not covered by commercial codes, then you do not need the fire rating. If you did, you could screw 5/8" drywall over the surface of the OSB.For the smell, I recommend BIN pigmented shellac as a primer. It may take two coats to seal the surface, as OSB can be thirsty. Topcoat of your choice, or leave in primer. Painting the OSB will do wonders for your light levels, too.Bill
Are you worried about the drywall sagging between the joists or is there a need to attach something to the ceiling? 5/8 drywall is used on 24 centers all the time.
"do I need a fire rating"Only your AHJ knows for sure!;)

Nah, he doesn't KNOW. But you still have to go with his opinion.

Unless you have some special reason for wanting an OSB ceiling - use 5/8" drywall - I think you will be happier in the long run.
24" oc = no problem with sags, etc. glue and screw.
BIL bought a house, with an outbuilding, which the previous owner had used as a wood shop. It had painted 7/16" OSB on walls and ceiling. The remaining nooks and crannies in the painted OSB did a great job of dust collection which was missed by his shop's dust collection system.

How'd you get $10 a sheet 3/4 inch T&G OSB?

lou,
I put .032 corragated metal on the ceiling in my shop. Cheap, easy to hang, reflects light well and does'nt dent to easy if ya accidently smack it with a long board.
Actually looks pretty good for a shop.
