Osb over old 1×8 exterior wall sheathing
Hi I’m new here and I’ve been searching the forum for an answer to my dilemma.
I recently decided to replace my siding that was in pretty bad shape. A lot of the boards were cracking or already broken. When I removed the old siding there is horizontal 1×10 boards that is used for the sheathing. The sheathing isn’t in bad shape for the most part, but there is some cracked boards and a couple that are warping. I can also see some water marks as well. My question is, should I put osb, plywood, or rigid foam over the existing sheathing or just put on a new weather barrier and go from there?
Thanks for any responses

check out zip system/huber engineered wood for insulated sheathing w/"house wrap" - they have a system for 're-sheathing' over existing sheathing - you would have to redo any trim as it won't sit properly with the additional thickness of the sheathing

good luck
Thanks for the link. I looked at this site before but somehow missed that zip has this product available. I’ll check out some of the videos as well!
OSB or Zip over the 1x10 would give you better shear strength and a nice flat surface. Tough to give advice on whether it's needed or not when we cant see the condition of what you have.
Post some photo's and you may get a more meaningful response...
Hi Steve, I added a couple photos. Please let me know if those aren’t showing enough of the walls or more photos would be helpful!
What type of siding are you going to be installing?
It looks like good quality material to me. I'd make sure it was nailed solidly to the studs and put WRB and siding on it. I think adding foam would be fine as well. Good luck.
the existing sheathing doesn't look "terrible" in the pictures - you could patch in plywood/osb where needed to match the existing, then do the WRB and some foam board to up the insulation value - another thought is to use expansion foam to fill the gaps between the existing sheathing boards then the WRB
good luck
