OSB prices in your area…?

ponytl | Posted in General Discussion on March 24, 2004 04:26am

OSB prices in your area… and what to expect…

was at HD yesterday… been a while since i priced sheet goods… so i see… 3/4 t&g subfloor… $33 a sheet….  and i’m like DANG (used the f word) total sticker shock… then i had to go look at 7/16   $22 a sheet…   now i start feel’n rich and wonder if my insurance will cover the  400 sheets of 3/4 i have in my warehouse… and the over 800 sheets of 7/16…  I think’n I’m start’n to look like fort knox… the theives will pass over the tools to steal the sheet goods… so now i’m really think’n for real… should i sell the stuff i have (know a few builder who would love to save $5 a sheet…) think’n the price will return to realistic… or is this realistic.. i don’t see me needed this material for at least a year…

just for those who will have to know… I got the stuff from distributor who had it in route to a supply house and filed for bankruptcy while the stuff was in transit… this was in the $6.50 a sheet days…  so instead of them eat’n frt both ways i took 2 truckloads and spit it with a few buddies at a pretty nice discount… (also got a few hundred sheets of 5/8 T 1-11)…

anyway… any ideas on where prices will go? right now it looks like i did better in “lumber” than i ever did in the stock market…

I believe that prices in sheet goods are at a temporary high, caused by a variety of things.

However since I said that I realise that with the price of oil at all time highs and many other aspects of our economy (steel for example) at record highs it's possible we are enduring a quiet bit of inflation.. if you think about it the requirements for inflation are present.. the economy is being stimulated by the politicians out for reelection, the unexpected cost of a war in Afganistan and Iraq has America borrowing a lot of money and the national debt is soon to be out of control..
In the past the way the government has always delt with high debt levels is to allow inflation to make the debt level seem  a small problem.

How true it is, I have no idea, but as i hear it, and I hear alot, all the plywood companies are stockpiling and shipping such a high volume of sheathing earmarked for, YUP, you guessed it, rebuilding of Iraq, leaving short supplies here in the US

    God Bless America!

    Pony,

    Geez,

'bout a 1.5 years ago I paid ~$10.49 a sheet for 3/4" T&G  and $3.49 for 7/16 OSB.   How times change......and 7 years ago paid $1.49/sheet for 1/2" drywall.  Stocked up. Did you know you CAN get 100 sheets in a 3/4 ton P/U? (w/t 2.5 ton spings)

At least un-needed consumer appliances from china are still cheap,

    Jon

Rumor floating around is that Haliberton and contractors building, rebuilding, in Iraq and Afghanistan have ordered what amounts to an entire years production of plywood and other sheet goods. One of those unanticipated consequences of war. Now you have to take out a loan to build a doghouse.

"Rumor floating around is that Haliberton and contractors building, rebuilding, in Iraq and Afghanistan have ordered what amounts to an entire years production of plywood and other sheet goods."

Last year when plywood prices shot up similar rumors kept floating around. Several times there were links posted here which disproved that. But the rumor persists.

I guess it's easier to believe claims about Iraq than to accept that it's supply and demand. If I melt dry ice, can I take a bath without getting wet?

Your story makes me think of a joke. Can't remember the whole thing, but it went something like this:

A farmer found a lamp, rubbed it and a genie came out. But this genie was old, and could only offer one wish every couple of months. So the farmer wishes for soybean prices to go up to $10 a bushel.

The genie comes back a 2 months later and asks what the farmer wants this time. He says again that he wants beans to go up to $10 a bushel. The genie reminds him that he had already wished for that. Prices had gone up to $10 for several days before falling again.

The farmer says: "Yeah, but this time I'm gonna sell"

    .

The point being that you don't have a fortune in plywood unless you sell it or use it.

Why do they call it "Oriental Strand Board"???

I just bought 5/8 plywood yesterday at about $22/sheet. Osb was MORE expensive than plywood in all the relevant sizes.

    BTW, NE ohio

Makes me wonder what the hell they have done to cheapen up ply that isn't visible?

Other than making it a 32nd of an inch thinner.

How many of those 32s add up to how many more sheets at the end of the day, week, year?

I checked around here this morning just out of curiousity

        7/16 OSB is $18

        3/4 T+G is $28

3/4 Advantech is $32Right now I am having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before.

3/4 t&g subfloor here is about $27, and that's a locally owned small yard that gets everything floated in on a ferry (adds several hours and $300 fare per semi load). Your HD has BIG ONES!!!
