This one may be a little tough to help with, but I figured I’d give it a try.
While in Germany I noticed that in wooded areas and fields on the side of roads and foot paths you would come acroos these “prayer Stations” Basically it was a crucifix that was housed on a larger cross with a diamond like background. The top of the cross was the peak and the back went to the end of each arm and then back towards the foot of the cross or corpus. I guess you would call it a narrow shelter for the crucifix.
Can anyone help with this like thte name so that i can reaserch it and make one?
Where can I get a corpus that will last outside, what type of wood should I use, for the croos and structure? What would be a good choice for finishing it.
Thanks for any help, KaiserRoo

Well, in terms of durability there are many options. Most of them are tied into your choice of desired finish so I think you need to settle on that first. You can use pressure treated woods painted or stained (not right away, wait for the wood to dry our thoroughly). You can use naturally rot resistant woods such as cedar, and perhaps even composites such as Trex or vinyl "wood" depending on the dimensions you want to work in.
Hope this helps...

In some of the rural areas of this country, you could use a half buried bathtub.

We call those "Bathtub Virgin Marys". They are common around the southwest. I know where there is one that was done with a skirted tub instead of the "traditional" (smirk) claw foot tub. It's really ugly!

I have seen the bath tub Mary's and they seem to make a good looking and long lasting background protectors for the statue.
I would prefer to use a rot resistant wood like cedar rether than PT or trex but if my SIL want's one I'd consider it.
Thanks for the help keep the ideas coming.

Something from the vague recesses of memory growing up said this was a "Prayer Station" for pilgrims.
I googled images for that term and came up with this - is it what you are thinking of? The blog that contains the photo is a trip to Germany...

Thanks again for the help, KaiserRoo
Oak, redwood and cedar.
Unfinished, it'll turn "ancient" in 3 or 4 years and last another 50 with minor repairs.

You could always build a little shelter like this...I just happened to be looking at photos of Carmel California by the sea and noticed this one.

This too would work but it's a little big for the area I thought about placing it, though my sister in law might like it that size.

Why not contact the Archdioses in your area? If there's any organization in the world that can answer questions on this subject, the Catholic Church is it.
Like, they've done a few of them, right?
This to is an option, I should have asked the priest yesterday but my daughter was sleeping and I wanted to get her home. Our regular priest is out due to a heart attack but being from Ireland he might be remember these prayer stations first hand.

I've done some business with the Catholic Church and found them to be very well organized. I suspect that one phone call would yield a world of information, eventually leading to your choice of blue prints for any number of designs.
Anything to do with proper forms of worship, they'll have someone specific to answer questions and provide supporting documentation.
