Can anyone advise an archived article on building a outdoor deck over living space (i.e. how to waterproof). The Nov. 1997 issue is not the one.The article had shon various details around columns and adjacent to the house, as well as a detail of how th deck would drain without water infiltration.

mkap - I remember the 1997 article, but not the one you reference. You may wish to check out http://www.grailcoat.com - they sell a thin coat cement product that is waterproof and makes your deck like a patio.
The last deck I built w/rubber roofing leaked the 1st time, so I'd better not give advice on that method.
Use Seal-O-Flex on a 1/4" per foot sloped 3/4" decking, then silicone down strips of foam sill sealer. On those, lay down tapered treated strips. Build the (lvel) deck in sections or "pallets" on that. Every 5-7 years, lift up the sections and recoat the Seal-O-Flex top coat. I've done a couple, and can send pix if you're interested.

Thanks much. I would be interested in pics if you can send them. I appreciate your help. Anything in the way of details would help as well.

Here is a picture from the ground and one up top during construction (I didn't choose the colors!) The third picture is the bare Seal-O-Flex on the same house, but on the front porch roof - no deck.
Rainwater drains out from under the shingles in the first picture - they exist to look good, screen the deck and meet historic codes.
I'll need to look back last year for the construction shots of the roof and deck.
