Why do you have to keep that wide overhang on the front of
trackt ranch homes.
We wanted to change the look of our home without a great expense
we thought some kind of moulding along the roof line would look
nice with a new door and windows.
anything to change the look of a RANCH IS A RANCH IS A RANCH.
We have become so frustrated we are waiting to retire but
wanted to get the house fixed to our liking and comfort but we
are having very little success with remodelers and designers
and builders. It seems that whatever is square is a go and I
do understand that is the fastest way for them to make the
dough. But not our dough we are settling in and we want
what we want and not what they want.
SO! we decided just to change what I have mentioned above.
Any suggestions or ideas are truly welcome.
And the magazine looks great.

Maybe try asking your question at the breaktime forum. get more responses. Don't see why you couldn't, but overhangs do a lot of good--allow for vents at the eves (sheltered from the weather), keep the rain from washing down the siding, and keep the sun out of the windows in the summer. All good things.
If you think of your house as more of a Prairie style instead of a ranch- look to those stylistic elements of those landmark homes -ie FLW one story Usonian's- you may be able to make your "Rancher" over nicely and sensitively to its architecture.
The overhangs are the upper horizontal element-the most important, sheltering one-that defines a Prairie style The facia of the roof should be strong and other elements, fenestration (windows) cladding (siding/stone veneer) -maybe add a beltline just below or above windows with a change of materials-should celebrate the horizontality of your overhanging protective hip roof. You can also throw in Mid-Century modern to the mix if your house is a bit more contemorary pretty effectively- some of these elements, non-structural screens around and about the entryway or garden/garage and such can bring a lot architecture and style rather inexpensively to a home.
and don't forget about landscaping- you should be thinking of your whole lot -structure and land -as an overall style that fits you and the existing house and the context of the area.
Hope this gives you some ideas.
