I know there are still plenty of people reading House Chat, but how about a new discussion thread? Here’s one:
What features used in home construction today are apparently popular, but you don’t feel are particularly attractive? Is there anything that makes you wonder, “Why do people keep installing that stuff? There’s gotta be something that looks better!”
For example, I don’t particularly care for those entry doors that feature long oval windows with pseudo-leaded glass, but the big-box stores stock them and lots of people seem to buy them.
Another thing that looks odd to me is the use of plain, flat windows on the fronts of houses with no casing or other ornamentation, causing the house facade to take on a rather plain, flat “2-dimensional” appearance.
I know, I know, “to each his own,” but I’d like to hear your opinions to see if there’s anything in house/home style today that a lot of people don’t like, but for some reason or another, continues to be used.

whats up with the styrofoam pillars on million dollar homes?
Sheesh! That sounds a bit crazy!
Here in So. Calif., there are a lot of ranch-style tract homes. There's a nice, 50 year old neighborhood named "Rossmoor" near Los Alamitos - Seal Beach that features the so-called "gingerbread ranch" style of homes that were built in the 1950's. There's a lot of remodeling going on in that neighborhood - some sensible, some otherwise. I have seen at least one home there where Tuscan style columns were installed, despite that the house was still principally in the ranch style. I haven't gone up to check if the columns are made of Styrofoam, but they certainly look out of place to me!

Just about 1/2 of all new houses and remodels in the high-end market here in Southern California seen to be- Tuscany Tuscany Tuscany!- what the heck does that mean? A couple of walls of stone veneer, tile roofs, columns, arches, towers- overscaled everything! Doesn't look anything like the modest farmhouses of Tuscany that I saw when there- unless it was perhaps a village.
Even modest homes with just a hint of Mediterranean to them are proudly termed Tuscan!That term/style is already tiresome to me but I think it will have legs for a bit longer.
I don't like windows with those fake grills between the panes to simulate a 6 over 6 or such. The snap in ones are pretty cheesy to. I used simulated divided lites, so there are permamnently affixed grilles on the inside, outside & between the panes. Looks much more substantial that way.
