Paint and spackle over wallpaper liner?

If this isn’t a good forum for this problem, maybe someone knows a better place for a solution?
[Note: I know, I know…. wallpaper and showers do not mix. Dontcha just love when in-laws ask for help AFTER a screw up?]
This bathroom has been previously wallpapered. That wallpaper was peeled off and of course took some of the drywall facing paper with it (wasn’t sized). So, wallpaper “liner” was put up to smooth out the peeled areas. Then more wallpaper. Again, wallpaper peeled (imagine that hapenning in a bathroom!).
So now they want to paint instead. Here are the questions.
Can wallpaper liner be painted? Should it be primed or “sized” first?
What about any gaps in the liner (see attached picture), will spackling work?
TIA
Phil

If the paper has peeled, what makes you think the paint will stick? IMHO you should strip the liner, skim coat the walls with all-purp mud, then paint per spec.

Well, nobody says you can't paint wallpaper liner, depending of what kind of end result you can or can't accept, and how long would you want the paint job to last.
If you are going to paint the wall paper liner, don't spackle the seams. They give character to the paint job so people would know it's wall paper liner.
If you want to do it the proper way, go with the above poster. Don't cut corners.

You've already got all the advice you need. I just wanted to mention that there's no problem hanging the correct paper in a bath, including over a shower. Just need the right paper and paste. Back when I was hanging professionally we often did it. Foils were popular at the time.

Saw paper hung in a shower and the HO wanted the DW "patched" and a better paper hung....
