Paint process for a shingle roof

liam | Posted in General Discussion on September 25, 2011 09:36am

I spoke with a representative of a company that paints and adds new granules to an existing shingle roof.  They give a 15 year warranty. The roof has to be in good or better condition, but is at the time of possible replacement.  The price seems to about 1/3 the cost of replacement.  Does anyone have experience with this method?   My interest is that I have roof without leaks and looks very good. It is shingle over slate. I know I did not do that!  There is 2 layers of roof, and the tear off is a big deal considering the slate.  This process can also be reapplied sometime in the future, and all this sound too good. Maybe too good!  What do you guys think.?  Thanks  Liam

Did his truck have rainbows and unicorns painted on the side? I've seen these crooks pop up like Jack in the Boxes every few years for the past 40 years. Miracles in a can, basement coatings, driveways coatings, wall coatings and roof coatings. They hit town, sell like crazy with 'guarantees" and are gone or out of business about the time the stuff starts peeling off. "Run Forest, run!"

The company that offers this process can be viewed at  www.smartshingle.us     Thanks for reply.  Have not seen the truck. Maybe i should.

I have, in the past, used "elastomeric coating" on parts of a roof to extend the life of a roof on its last legs.  Got maybe 3 more years out of it.  But it looks like sith and, even if you put granules on it (which sounds halfway plausible and would improve the appearance slightly) I doubt if you'd extend the life of the roof more than another 5 years.  I certainly wouldn't do this to a roof that is currently in good condition and has no cracks or leaks.  And I doubt if it would be much good on a roof with any sort of a  curling problem.

I'd suggest that you start saving up to have it done right.

    Roof coatings

Conklin Mfg. use to sell a roof coat like you are talking about. I don't think it ever gained enough market share to be self supporting and profitable for them. I haven't looked for it in years, but there is a reason it is not a well known solution.

Do search on roof coating and see what you find.

Singles over slate?? Someone pounded nails through slate? There must be a mess of broken pieces underneath. Might be time to bite the bullet and redo the roof properly but it could be expensive and involve new sheathing. Roof coatings are more for RVs and trailers before they are deteriorated, not shingled roofs.

        nada

After studying the website and watching the video, I see nothing much to convince me it would be of much value.

All roof coating can extend the life of a good roof, but do nothing to help one that is alreay in need of replacement. So if your roof were stil good - say only ten years old, and you re-coated every five years, it might help - but how much and at what cost?

One thing that they totally skip on that video demo is this - how did they clean that roof? There is NO new roll-on skin that will do anby good at all if it is not fully adhered. If not done right, it can cause problems by trapping water. And dirt, debris and dust wil interfere with full and complete adhesion

          Paint over shingle

Thanks .  I have been told they spend alot of time cleaning the roof.  I do not see how you can get everything and of course you need it perfectly dry.  Maybe they would do mine as a demo. LOL. I think I will skip this one. I appreciate your comments.  Liam

    Actually, it's http://www.smartshingles.us.

And if you look closely at the "See it yourself" color chooser image it's showing regular shingles which are variegated in color, whereas the actual application video shows that the color is solid and quite uniform (if they do the job halfway correctly).  You'll never get a job that looks like their color chooser.

      paint over shingles

Sorry I did not include  the http://  so there it is.

My roof is just black. Solid uniform color. The granules they spray one look like the ones on the roof now.     Thanks for the comments.

I just looked their site over and watched the video. As noted, the roof would have to be clean and probably completely dry unless that;s a water borne adhesive. The other issue, is that the shingles would have to be in pretty good shape for this process to work. IE, there'd have to be 10 years left in the roof before it would be a candidate. So it appears to me, that it's not really a rejuvenation method, but just a method to change the roof color.
