Painted the….

WingNut | Posted in General Discussion on July 1, 2008 11:57am

Hey Guys and Gals,

Just when I think I have seen it all, I stopped by home this afternoon to give a couple (late 60s) some options on upgrading their flooring on the ground level. I was shocked when I laid my eyes on what was there…

Apparently, they didn’t like the way the carpet looked after they PAINTED it!!!!! It was unbelievable. She told me that she though that it would look good if it was “primed well enough”. The question begged to be asked so I threw it out there. Apparently, the tip was you need to prime it at least twice in order to get a nice top coat. The wise arse in me came out and told them that they needed to lightly sand between coats to get that glass like finish. I though they would appreciate the humor but all I did was get the gent in trouble. She turned to him and slapped his shoulder and told him “Told you that we should have done that, now look at this mess”. No joke, I couldn’t make this $h!t up if I wanted to.

One last one, I asked the gent how he edged so well. There was no paint on the molding at all. He said he taped the molding of course, got that tip on TV. I would have loved to see that.   Tape the moldings and paint the carpet.

I worked in an auto body shop when I was in HighSchool, we'd get fairly nice cars and scuff em and detail the engines, and paint them..and the Boss said "Paint the carpets too"  No kidding.

One day as I arrived to work, I saw Pa.State Troopers everywhere, and the Boss cuffed and stuffed into a patrol car.

Seems we were repainting stolen rides. I was asked a few questions, and sent on my way. I was also owed about 2 weeks pay, maybe 300.00$, called Boss's house after he was bailed out and asked about the pay, he told me to go pound sand. That's when I asked him how he'd like to buy his air tools back, I knew he'd try to skip me, so I cleaned out the shop after the cops left (G).

    I got my money.

I can't top that one, but my brother and his wife sponge painted their old linoluem floor to make it look better until the had the $$ to replace it. I was amazed how nice it looked and how well it held up (not sure if they put on some kind of topcoat).

    But carpet?...sheesh!

    ok for my confession:

worked in the car business for years, loading up your gun with some paint, thinned way down and dusting the carpets is very acceptable practice.if your looking at a car and want to no if it's been done run your hand across it,it will be a little stiff.

now painting hose carpet. my daughter has a white plush in her room, she's a swimmer. says "dad i want my room to look like a pool". well as any dad with a daughter knows, you do it, laid blue tile around the walls at 4',did the walls below in blue, painted the depth above the tile.it was pretty cool.she says i want blue carpet, so i got a roller out and lightly painted the carpets blue,to look like shimmering water. sold the house that way, told the buyer i will put down new carpet,no way we want it like that.

i've never loaded a pic,but i'll try this one larry

oh and i also masked the baseboards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like the way the wall under the tiles came out. What technique did you use to get that effect?

the blue is wallpaper, the gray  is a 2x4 that was painted with gray to look like cement lip on pool, theres lights behind all that,my daughter wanted me to do her new room the same, naw i don't think so...there was like 1400 of those little half round tiles! larryif a man speaks in the forest, and there's not a woman to hear him,is he still wrong?

    OK...here's mine:

Spring Break, a friend of mine and I decide we're going to rebuild the engine in his 66 Ford Mustang (289). Takes us a week and to top it off, we also decide to do our own paint too.

We run down to Kragen Auto supply and buy 27 cans of 'green' spray paint in a texture called 'buff' whatever that means. It takes us about 6 hours but we "get her done" and it really was a thing of beauty. I'm embarrassed to say our judgment, by that point in time, was clouded by the joy of having done it ourselves. It looked like we were driving a green golf ball down the road. The texture had the look and feel of very close cut felt, a carpet like appearance and way too much to scrap off so he just drove it like that.

A guy in my home town in the 60's painted a 54 chevy with a brush and roller using oil base white house paint.  Then he took a fan and sprinkled glitter in front of the fan so it sprayed over the wet paint on the car.  I wish I could say it looked good but it looked like what you are thinking.  DanT

I vaguely remember seeing this on trading spaces many years ago. (DW loved that show). I'm not sure what kind of paint they used, but they were trying to redo a room and stay under the $1000 limit.

Edit: found this link referencing the show:
