So what are some good tips for painting a steel door besides good quality paint and a good brush.
As I said, door is steel and the color is a hi gloss dark maroon so I know it will take a few coats. And the humidity here is like 98% so I want to keep from having any runs.
Ideas?

I painted my door, and got surprisingly decent results. Here's how:
First, remove the door, and lay it across sawhorses in a place that will not be subject to falling leaves, dust, etc.
Preparation is, as usual, critical. Every ding, scratch, and bit of glue must be dealt with before painting. Personally, I get great results using the fine AVOS (scotch-brite) pads on an angle grinder. It's not impossible that you'll wind up stripping the old paint off completely.
The paint you choose is critical. While Rust-o-leum in general is a great paint, even better in this application is their lacquer product. This paint is much thinner than the usual product, and is very subject to runs. The focus is on many LIGHT coats, almost a dusting.
If the paint is to be applied without using a spray can, look for extremely thin roller covers. They will say that they're recommended for painting metal with enamel paints.
Since this is a door, time is critical. Apart from doing this job in the morning, it helps to have the door face warmed in the sun before painting.
I have dark maroon paint on my house doors too. Cessna Maroon to be exact. (auto motive type paint)
I wipe the door thoroughly with a cleaner like Prep-sol
Then wet sand lightly with 400 wet or dry paper.
Then spray with a good gun. The paint will last a long, long time without any detrioration. Mine are 20 years old and still look like new.
Nothing is as durable as automotive enamel.
