Painting coil stock on fascia?

Crawdad | Posted in Construction Techniques on January 29, 2006 07:00am

Is it a viable solution to paint fascia covered w/ coil stock.   The paint on my fascia isn’t holding up at all.  Many of the boards are cracked/checked etc.  I back primed ,end primed and used quality paint.    I’ve been considering covering the fascia with the pre bent coil stock ( I don’t have a break) which as far as I know only comes in white, and then painting it down the road if the bride can’t live with the color.   I wish I had used Azek or something similar but I really don’t want to tear down whats already done and start from scratch.    I guess a big part of the problem is that its a good sized job for one guy (my own place)  and I get done a little here and a little there and now alot of the fascia looks like crap.  With the coil stock I figured I could get everything covered and come back and paint when everything else is done.  I don’t want to waste my time if this isn’t a good idea though.  Alll advice appreciated.

As long as the coil stock is clean it is paintable.  I would call your local Sherwin Williams store and ask them for the appropriate products.  They may recommend a bonding primer but my guess is 2 coats of Super Paint or Duration.   If the stock is aluminum you shouldn't have any problems with adhesion.   I prefer to spray instead of brush but either would be fine.

coil stock comes in every type of colour.  They sell it at roofing stores or vinyl siding places or gutter suppliers.  Pre-made fascia comes in every colour too.  I would never paint it..it's not designed for that unless you get it sprayed at a body shop..which is what some people do to get an exact colour match.

If you want to paint the metal, don't get the plastic coated variety.

So long as its not a coated aluminum and you use the proper paint, you'll be fine.

Why not paint it before you install it. Save time and the headache of climbin' on up there after it's installed. Cause you know the wife is gonna have you paint it.

You're so right about the wife part.  I'm trying to sell her on a factory color that comes pre-bent.  I don't want to buy a brake just for this.  Nothing can ever be easy,ya know?

Ya don't have to tell me brotha.

Put an addition on my house two years ago.....still piddling with the details. (The shoemakers children go barefoot and all)

While I was designing the addition, one of my biggest concerns was incorporating a fireplace into the family room. One that I wanted to be the focal point of the entire house. I spent more time researching products and working on layout and details on this feature than the rest of the project combined.

Knowing full well that our tastes vary greatly....she's partial to simple finishes while I tend toward ornate...I incorporated windows that would accept stained glass panels. Without the panels, the windows are useless.....inoperable, too high, yada, yada.

I was certain to clear all decisions with her before moving forward.

Well....here we are two years later and she insists she never "OKed" the stained glass. My "focal point" sits waiting for common ground to be found.

Women....can't live with 'em....can't shoot 'em.

        Best of luck to ya!

it's not the stained glass she doesn't likeit's because it spells 'Anheiser Busch' on it :)

Love her to death.....just find myself scratchin' my head as to how we ever ended up together in the first place, from time to time.

JD, you have my sympathy and I need yours too.

2 years? Try 12. No major reno, just interior finishing.

We were in the previous house for 13 years and when we finally got everything done we had to move to the present house because the kids started high school in a different area.

Now we have been here for 12 and we are still onto some "final touches".

At times I just told her to tell me what she wanted and I would do it then she would say I didn't care anymore. Then it started all over again.

We have a lot that has been sitting vacant for 20 years and she has been saying that once we finished this one we'd start building on the lot.

Think I'll fall for that one?

            I feel your pain brotha!!!

The addition has been going on for two years...we've been in the house for eleven. Had I waited to finish the house up before adding on, it likely never would have happened.

I swear.....had I hired a contractor to do all the work, it woulda been done in three months! I'm just lucky the wife doesn't fire my azz! LOL

I don't know if it has been mentioned, but you could rent a break for a day or two and bend it all at once, short of that you could also call a local HVAC or fabrication shop and ask them what they would charge to bend it to your specs?

        1. Crawdad | Feb 08, 2006 05:02pm | #18

Good Idea, there's a sheet metal place right down the road here.

crawdad, like huddledmass says... you're just not shopping in the right place..

pre-bent fascia comes in many colors..

but i disagree as to wether you can paint it again or not..

we paint it all the time for custom match.. just like we paint gutters to custom match

Thanks Mike, I did go on alcoa's website and they do have many colors, I just have to special order from my local supply house (if one of the 700 colors suits the wife).
