Hi!
I am not a professional and a newbie to restoration in general and have a question for painting a front door. I have used a high gloss paint but want a really, really glossy(and pretty) finish on my front door. I was wondering if there were a clear finish I could apply that would give this effect? Or would anything else be over-kill??? Or just more work that won’t really make much of a difference? Thanks for your time, and for not laughing too much at what might be a ridiculous question.

I would think you'd have to go at it like car painting. Multiple coats, super-fine sanding between coats, paint sprayed on (and not from an aresol can), then clear coated.
If it's a steel or fiberglass door, I would seriously think about pulling the hinge pins, take it to a body shop, and let them do it....maybe seven layers of laquer :-) -- somebody here on the forum paints neat flame jobs, hehehe. Then take it home and rehang it --- carefully. Shouldn't be a problem. You'd just have to figure a way to cover/seal the front door opening for a few days.
If wood, a body shop would be leary to touch it with automotive paint. If it is wood, consider buying a new door in steel or fiberglass, leave the wood door in until you get the other door painted. Doors aren't that expensive.
Good luck.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies---the door is wood and the car wax idea intrigued me. I'll let you guys know. Thanks for your time.

You don't mention if your entry door is recessed in a porch or directly exposed to sun and weather...
---the door is recessed and is facing north. It isn't directly exposed but if a good nor'easter comes along it may get wet. This is however not the norm.

re - ---the door is recessed and is facing north.
Thanks - Wanted to know because we have two sheltered entries that I am planning on refinishing (stain, not paint).
The door being recessed and protected from weather should give you many more options.
