MY husband and I need to paint our new metal roof. We want to use Benjamin Moore’s Iron clad b/c we like colors available, and it was recommended by a local painter. Follansby the manufactuere of our TErne II roof recommends only yhr yse of their own paint, obviously. Does anyone have ahy experience or knowledge of thes paints. IT’s a 12/12 pitch three stories up and we don’t want to paint it again for many years.

Wendy,
We put on a new terne porch roof about 7 years ago and painted it with one coat of Follansby's primer and one coat of their finish color. It has stood up very well here in Michigan. Their paint had a linseed oil base and was very slow to dry. But, I understand that the linseed oil gives the paint the flexibility to withstand seasonal changes. Anyway, they suggested waiting two weeks in between coats. I think that I read somewhere that they may have reformulated their paint. So, you might want to ask about it when you call their 800 number.
On the other hand, I should mention that a friend in Virginia had poor luck with Follansby's paint on a new terne roof but I think that may have had to do with tree sap falling on the roof. Finally, does a Terne II roof require painting? I know that Follansby makes one of their metals which does not require paint. One last point. I wouldn't trust the local paint store for advise. They don't see this type of roof very often and from my experience with an older terne roof on my house they haven't been able to come up with a suitable product after 20 years of trying.
