Anyone know anything about painting the new (to this area) Micronized Copper Azole PT lumber? I have to replace 50 door threshold support boards on an apartment complex. My plan for now is to use the Micronized lumber and prime with an oil base primer. I won’t do the final painting, but I understand they like to use oil based paint there. I was told to use PT, and I think maybe the Micronized will hold paint better than ACQ. I’d like to use KDAT lumber, but it is only available in premium #1 grade so it is too pricey for these rental units.
Thoughts?

We do almost all our deck rails with MCQ and usually let it dry for a week and have at it. it takes paint much better than PT or ACQ.
Who you callin' Azole, Azole?

could you use Azek instead? Cost more than PT but it wouldn't need to be primed. Plus, there'd be no Al to Cu contact
If it's KDAT you should be able to prime it right away, but allowing some air dry time wouldn't hurt, just to be safe, especially with oil primer. Ideally, you could preprime everything, then spot prime as you cut and install the pieces.
Check the label to be sure, but I think oil primer can accept oil or latex paints.

Thanks guys.
Yes Ted, there are oil primers that can be topcoated with latex. The idea is to get everything back primed, end primed, etc, to reduce the moisture cycling that will reduce paint life, especially since these are going to be right above the concrete porches.
Henry: Azek is way too expensive for these rental apartments. Especially since I need to use 2x6s and 2x8s.
Next problem: all the Lowes around here are out of the loads for my Remmington PAT (Powder Actuated Tool). HD sells Ramset. I wonder if Ramset loads would work in Remmington? - assuming they are the same caliber... I am good on the special nails for the Remmington.
FYI, I ended up going with KDAT Micronized lumber. The KDAT was only a little more expensive and this way I'm sure I'll get good paint adhesion.
Good choice. It amazes me how many people buy that soaken wet pt lumber to save a couple of bucks and end up regreting it in the end.
Regarding you question about the power loads, ask it in the Tools forum and you'll get some responses. I'm guessing they're interchangeable, but I don't know that for sure.~ Ted W ~
