I am having steel railings made and I’d like to paint it black. What can I get from your basic orange box that will give me the appearance, if not the wear, of a powder coating?
I have no spraying equipment, so I hope to find that magic can. Should I look towards the automotive stores?

i fab & paint alot of steel... most of it black... I go to the pait places or a very good choice is a farmers co-op and use industrial or tractor gloss black... the stuff from the big box is 35-50 bucks a gallon... the industrial red oxide primer & gloss black from the co-ops usually runs less than $20... you can brush or even roll it on with a very good brush or small roller add a little penitrol (sp) it will take a little longer to dry but it will "self level".... automotive paints with a hardner is a great choice but needs to be sprayed and usually runs about $100 a gallon...

Good prep. Remove all weld slag and spatter. Smooth over sharp edges because the wet paint film tends to pull back from them and leave an unpainted line. Good quality materials and good light.
For commercial work epoxy primers followed by polyurethane topcoats are quite durable, but they come no smaller than gallons and require mixing of two components.
