bought a new vanity for our bathroom; it’s made of particle board. what do I use to seal it so it doesn’t swell and fall apart when the bottom edges(inevitably)get wet?
thanks,
GWB

You could try paint, polyurethane, or shellac, but water is still likely to get in somehow. A better option might be to set the cabinet on some sort of spacer (like metal washers) and wrap the cabinet with baseboard, either wood or vinyl.

*This Might sound Crazy, but recently a guy came into our shop and had us form up a base for a vanity out of sheet metal. His thinking was like yours. Just put out a pile of cash and didn't want the thing to be junk. (I believe it was going into a basement bathroom). Anyway we made him a base to the same dimensions as the wood one he started with, and then painted it out with a neutral rust paint. He was very pleased with the end result. Not sure what the boss charged him, but it took about an hour to shear, form, and paint the thing.
*If I build onto the base it'll be too high, I guess I'll just find something to seal the daylights out of it. I couldn't find a vanity that wasn't made out of particle board; my next question would be why on earth are they manufactured out of a material that just about instantly breaks down and looks like hell when it gets wet? Kinda stoopid...thanks,GWB
*Many of our customers are now going with a greater than standard height vanity. Seems they are starting to realize they don't have to bend down so far to get to the bowl. With 36" instead of 30" we can slip in an extra drawer or make the base taller for the HVAC duct. Also, a taller base makes room for another slide out drawer which can be used for a concealed safe or as a one step platform for the youngsters who cannot quite reach the new height of the vanity sinktop or the 4'6" wife married to the hulk. Also, there are some cabinet makers that include plastic spacers with their hardware package. About 3/4" tall with a hole in the middle. Used to space certain countertops off the top of the cabinet but could be used as feet to keep the cabinet off the floor. I would still seal the edges of the cabinet, however.
*Maybe I wasn't clear enough in my post. By base I meant foot, you know the 3-4" board at the bottom of the vanity that sits on the floor. We replaced it with steel.
*GWB --I agree completely. Those HD particle board things suck. We should take them all out and burn them -- a bonfire of the..... ;-)-- J.S.(PS: You have no idea how long I've waited for an opportunity to make that dumb joke -- Thanks....)
*JS-as luck would have it, I worked briefly on the film(bonfire, etc). shoulda burned the movie, too:)-GWB
