paslode fuel leaks

ponytl | Posted in General Discussion on February 4, 2006 07:56am

if you guys use the red fuel cells in your framing guns (don’t know what else you would use) you might want to check the date code  of MAY07  i’ve had at least 6 that i know of… leak at the valve

i had just purchased a case (6 2pks)  and i knew we were shoot’n alot of nails but they seemed to be go’n fast… we use 2-3 guns about everyday… but one the plumber has for simple blocking so it’s not shot alot… and the other 2 get pretty good use but we are mostly make’n a few mods and blocking so not like full blown mass framing… we always unclick the top and pull the cell away and remove the battery at the end of the day…  so i was kinda think’n maybe someone was turn’n the cells where something was pressing on the fuel tip… or something… so i’m pop’n in a new cell and… dang if i can’t hear it leaking… i’m like “sob…this isn’t good… i twist it a little and the hissing goes away… ”  hmm  neevr happened before in hundreds of fuelcells… but hey  maybe i pushed it on sideways…  i shoot a few nails and get to think’n i pop it out  hold it under water and yep still leaks… i go find the other 2 guns…  same deal   pop off the valve cap… no leak… pop the cap/valve back on… same thing… i could twist the cap/valve and make it almost stop…  but never got em to zero…

I take 2 empties to Lowes… never even a question about it  they refund my money and i get 4 more… (lowes around here they almost bug you “may i help you sir” very impressed with their service)..

Now several were already 100% empty before i thought anything was wrong… so i really don’t know about those but the 4 new ones… same date code  all that i checked have leaked except for 1…

I email paslode… tell them they might want to check the fuel cells… I can’t see where them leaking is a good or safe thing…

i get an email back thank’n me for letting them know…they haven’t heard of this and they say they’ll send me a few fuel cells for my trouble… and pleas email back with the exact code on the cells…

next i get an email… “we sure would like those fuel cells back”  could you please  return them to us….

next i get this email

I hate to bother you again, but would it be too much to ask for you to
ship those leaky fuel cells back to us?
If you can please send to the address below.

Paslode
13825 W. Business Ctr. Dr.
Unit A
Lake Forest, IL 60045
Attn:Eric Gibson

For your inconvenience I would like to send you a couple of 2-packs of
red fuel cells. If you would please email your mailing address to me.

Thanks for your help and have a great weekend.

ok… now is it just me or…  i know i have at least 14 cells with this date code  all but one checked has shown leakage…  true i could not check the empty ones and we did shoot some nails.. but we only had 2 boxes (2500per) of 3 1/4 nails on site and still have  some left…i have  i think 4 that haven’t been used.. and paslode wants me to return em… at my expense for 4 “free cells” …. say 4k nails shot… 10 cells used…. I’ve never known really how many shoots we’d get out of a cell  but i know it was alot more than 400…  i can remember thinking at times… “man it has to be time for a fuel cell after a few days of shoot’n”  this past 2 weeks it was like… “i just put a new fuel cell in that gun”

I was in Lowes today…  same date code on all their stock…  so I guess they don’t think it’s a problem

pony

I emailed Jim back and told him i’d just return them to the store for replacement…

They probably want them so their engineers can disect them and see what and if there's a problem. Serious thing and can hurt a reputation.

You ought to send them in as they requested.

if they wanted them that bad... which i think they should... and i was them...

      I'd tell the customer (ie..me)

Give me your address and I'll call in a fed-ex pickup if you would just please box them up for...  and I'll get you fresh product to replace them back out to you...

as it is... I can return them all and get fresh product from lowes one for one... paslode wants to send me out 4 cells for my 14 and have me pay the shipping to them...  ie.. box them up go to the post office ...stand in line.... ect...

anyway... now if something bad happens to someone you guys know from a leaking cell... you know paslode knew about it... I hope it was some freak deal and i got the only ones out there that leaked... maybe I pushed the valve/tip on the wrong way 8-10 times...who knows...

but... I did have some marked I think JUNE11 and I checked those and they were all non leakers...   JUst wanted to give you guys the heads up and you might just want to check  for the MAY07 ones if you have any...  might be nothing but better to know than not

Good points. Hadn't thought that thru. So yep, back to point of purchase and let them deal with it.

For what it's worth I believe that Postal Service regulations prohibit shipping of the Paslode Fuel Cells. Several specific rules address aerosol / combustible / explosive / compressed gas / etc. Which pretty much seems to cover leaking (or potentially leaking) fuel cells.

    http://www.usps.com/cpim/ftp/pubs/pub52.pdf

Unless Paslode has identifed a shipping method that complies with all regulations you're certainly better off dealing with the original location where the fuel cells were purchased.

Wouldn't want anyone to inadvertantedly end up on some suspicious person watch list for having shipped a prohibited item.
