Paslode Impulse problems

jonblakemore | Posted in Tools for Home Building on April 24, 2004 01:23am

I finally ordered an IMCT framer from Coastal Tool for $360, incl. shipping. I charged the batteries up, inserted the fuel cell and nails, and my gun won’t fire. The light blinks green quickly, and the fan will turn on when the contact tip is depressed, but no fire.

I tried to reach somebody at Paslode and CT, but to no avail. Of course this happens on a Fri. night.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Well I felt stupid at the time, but as I recall, I bought my first Impulse on a Friday as well, and same thing. As it turned out, (does anyone ever read the instructions?) I didn't realise that you had to push the gas tube in hard until it snapped into place. I just kind of had it half way in there. That kept it from firing. Worth a shot. What else ya gonna do with your weekend?

Check the expiration date on the fuel cell.  No kidding - they won't fire on expired cells.  Sometimes they'll fire but sporadically on and old cell. Once you get it to work you'll love the lobster.

So in addition to checking the date on milk...............

Jon, there is a "carburator" partially attached to the fuel cell. It has to be snaped all the way dowwn into place for it to work. That means placing it against a hard surface and pushing hard to snap it on.

To avoid losing fuel in shipping and storage from leakage, it is not shipped with the carbuerator engaged.

I think that may be the problem.

The other thing is the blinking green LED. I can't remember but I think mine stays permanent green when all systems are go. Check the manual for interpretation of light signals. Various combinations of flashing or solid, green or red, all mean something to the diagnosticians. I don't have the tool home, but you can check the troubleshooting page in your guide manual

Fuel cell:  Exp. date is 7/05, so that should be no problem.  I tried both that came with the gun.  I *think* the metering valve is snapped down tight on the cell and that it is engaged with the gun orifice.  I have smelled the fuel when messing with it, so I know some is escaping.  I can tip the valve towards the front, level, and towards the back of the canister.  They have some 2 step pictoral instructions on the canister to tip it forward then back.

Both batteries are fully charged and inserted properly, I think.  Obviously I'm getting some juice- light and fan operate.

I read the manual and there is no mention of a blinking green light.  It only mentions solid gr./red and blinking red.  I have read all the literature at least twice, and nothing has jumped out at me.

The nails I'm using are Senco.  Maybe Paslode has started attaching RFID tags to all of their nails so as to limit the use of generics?

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I'm sure I will find out it's something stupid I'm doing when it's up and running.

***Edit*** this was supposed to be addressed to all.

        Hi Jon...

Other than fuel cells, our main problem comes from not having the points fully depressed against the work piece.

Check the Allen bolts that are to the sides of the depth adjust slider. If these are loose, it may prevent the tip from fully depressing. It will depress enough to start the fan and release fuel, but will still fail to fire. We notice it most often when we're up in the air, trying to nail at a crazy angle. Also, if the gun was not properly lubed at the factory, the cylinder may not be pushing all the way past the o ring gasket. Try disassembling and greasing her up.

BTW... both of my framers and both my angled finishers blink green at the ready, and show solid green while the fan is on.

        Jon

        Hows that gun comming?

I thought of one thing that petmonkey touched on, if you open up the front end, like if theres a jamb, if you see that the plunger is down then it wont fire. Push it back up to the top with a awl and try firing it.

The other option is to take it back and get a new one!

The Paslode is finally working. My news is a little anticlimatic because I can't say what I did to get it operational.

I fiddled with the gas, battery, nails, depth set, etc. Then all of the sudden I was up and running.

          Thanks for the help.

Jon, what'd you find out about your Impulse?

Mine does  the flashing green on a full charge and then to red when the battery runs low.

Sounds like the fuel isn't getting delivered as mentioned by a number of previous posters.

So it's make sure the plastic carb head is snapped tight unto the fuel canister, make sure the date is not expired,  and then placed correctly in the gun.

I usually push the canister in by hand to make sure the nozzle snaps in tight before closing the door shield on it.

If you're not smelling any exhaust then the gas isn't getting to the gun.

In this case you want something smelling rotten in Denmark.
