I’m plannning to build a patio cover of Douglas fir. I live in southern California, and it will get lots of sun exposure. I’m trying to figure out what’s the best finish to use and how to apply it. I want a finish that will last at least 3-4 years. I don’t want the look of a typical house paint, but semi-opaque or opaque wood stain would be ok.
I’m considering building a trough lined with plastic, and soaking the wood in a sealer followed by a stain. Any advice on a method and product line of wood finish would be much appreciated.

Decks must be able to withstand high winds, so choose fasteners that offer the uplift resistance you need for your area.
