Hi,
I am doing my patio and given an alternative of having a grout and sand as alternative for the insert. I thought of going to grout as I have seen sand being washed out as days/months go on. Any idea or thoughts? Thank you in advance.

With the right approach, you can restore old hardware—whether through soaking, scrubbing, or polishing—giving it a fresh look while preserving its original charm.

Fran, I see this is your first post. Welcome to the Taunton forums. At the top right of your screen you will see a list of forums, starting with "Knots." Your question would probably get the most responses at "Over the Fence." That is the forum associated with Fine Gardening magazine.
To me the question is a bona fide construction item, not a gardening one.
The important vaariable is whether you experience freezing temps and/or whether this is open to the sky. Another is what room is adjacent to it. Stone dust is a good choice for some places, but it will get tracked into the house.
it also matters whether your under base is packed sand or maybe stone dust, or whether iot is a poured concrete slab
Where I'm going with this is tht in a freezing climate, when water gets into the joints, it will freeze if traped and do bad things

Excellence is its own reward!
Use this stuff and the sand will act like grout for up to 10 years:

Of course I'm in the SF Bay Area so have no clue when it comes to real weather.
I did have to pull up some pavers to lay a gas line and it was a bear - this stuff realy works, and at $50/gal it darn well better!
It all depends on the overall look you are trying to achieve - the sedum/thyme/dymondia etc. interplanting look is great. A little too hard for the grandkids to drive their push-cars though, so we went with the pavers
