I am in the process of residing my home and was getting to the back of the house which has a patio door. I live in a bungalow and was going to replicate the shed roof on the back door over the patio door. I may make it a little shorter and wider than than the door shed roof. I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas or opinions on this? Is it worth the trouble or should I just leave the patio door as is? I thought it may add little character as well. Any input?

I think adding an overhang would be a good thing.
For what it's worth, this is on the warranty page of my door supplier:
“Misuse” of a door includes, but is not limited to, using
a door on part of a building without providing adequate
overhang or an appropriate finish color. Adequate
overhang depends on the typical weather conditions
of the area where the door is to be used, but typically
means an overhang projecting a distance from the
structure one half the elevation difference between
the bottom of the door and the base of the overhang
structure at the point which is farthest from the door.
In order to reduce the chance of warping or checking,
dark colored finishes should be avoided on all surfaces,
especially on light colored wood species, or if the door
is exposed to direct sunlight.
Thanks TFB!
I was thinking it would not only give some symmetry to the back of the house but as well keep some of the elements out. It would be a simple shed roof but I thought about some nice stained bead board on the inside to keep it bright. Gives some protection from rain and the sun, since the back of the house faces east and it gets pretty warm. Have a good one!
Sounds cool. Take pictures and share it with us.TFB (Bill)
