I am trying to make a pattern to use when routing grooves in the kickboards for a set of stairs. I am using a 3/4 inch straight carbide bit with a bearing on top made for cutting patterns. However I tried using 3/4″ plywood as my pattern but it is not holding up. Any suggestions on what to use. Thanks.

Try partical board or MDF, both will cut very clean.

You might try router templet guides which are ecentually a bushing that attaches to the router base which runs against your plywood templet, rather than the router bit bearing.

try using a guide bushing system with your router and 1/4" tempered hardboard. I have used this for all kinds of templates, depending on what type of router your have the bushing system will set you back for 20 to 60 bucks, and the hard board is cheep cuts clean and very versatile. an advantage to the 1/4 " board is you don't have to extend you router bit so far out either.
