I've heard it can effect people in negative ways if they are sensitive to the dust.
People react to South American/exotic woods in many ways, you may be one of many that have severe reactions to this type of wood.
People have been known to die from the exposure to certain woods so don't take it lightly.
I cant offer any protective advice other then dust masks, full body protection(meaning long sleeve shirts, button at the neck, gloves,....)
You really do have to take this serious, you may just have a slight reaction to it and you may have something very serious to concern yourself with.

So that's what I have! Haven't been near any Ipe though! ;-)
The guy I work with has a chop saw without a dust chute. The other day he was cutting PT and a cloud of dust blew all over him and down his neck. He said now he doesn't have to worry about getting termites. (He doesn't wear safety glasses and has to stop every so often to wipe sawdust from his eyes when we work!)

Not flu-like symptoms, but when I did a photo shoot for FWW last summer of an ipe table under construction, I had to leave the shop for a time to avoid drowning in my own snot. It's nasty stuff.

Not sure where I read this, but some of these woods seem to be related to poison ivy/oak. Again, it was something from a long time ago, but I thought it was FWW.
