PDA’s – Pocket PC’s… Anybody?

| Posted in General Discussion on December 30, 2002 04:30am

I’ve been contemplating getting one of these little gizmos for a couple months now but don’t know which one. Whenever I see one I ask the user about it (all non-builders by the way) what they use it for, how they like it, what they don’t like etc.

So I would like to know who here is using a PDA or a Pocket PC and for what?

I have a Sony Clie and I think it is great!  Keeps appointments, tasks, read emails, alarm for reminders, contacts and even  has the news (through AvantGo).  You can download mapquest directions. I sync it with my computer every night.......I use it with Outlook (Outlook is a real gem also :-).  A VERY useful tool.....for me!

i just got one its great. it has many funcions like daily /weekly planner or calander. a great phone directory, memo pad and the capabilaty of taking digital pic and importing them into any of the just mentioned features, you can also get/ send email. exchange info w/ other computers/ printers. and all this w/ no bulky paper and fits on your hip or pocket .there is more you can do but ive had mine only for a week now. if you run your own small biz its perfect once you get one you will begin to see all the things that can be done to suit your needs or wants.

Call me a Luddite but I get along just fine with a stack of 3by5 cards, a small phone index and stubby pencils.

I also get along pretty well, by my standards at least, without a cell phone or beeper either. You can leave a message on my machine at home. I check it, at least when I need to be concerned with such matters, several times a day. I find that those who really need to get in touch do.

    I like simple.

I've been using a Palm for about 3 yrs.  Couldn't possibly get along without it.  Favorite part is the scheduler.  Jot down everything that needs to be done and at just the right time an alarm goes off reminding me.  Next best, is the phone/address book.  Got about a gazillion phone numbers in there.  Calculator gets a lot of use.  Thousands of free programs available for the Palm O.S. available to download off the net.  One program I paid for that was well worth the cost is "Documents To Go".  It lets me transfer MS Word docs & MS Excel spreadsheets to my Palm.  Any changes made then on my Palm or the computer in the office gets updated at the end of the day when I sync the data.

Paid over 3 hundred for the first one.  Lost it one day.  Looked all over, blamed some SOB for stealing it.  Paid 4 hundred for another one.  Last month I finally got around to cleaning out my truck & found the first one!  Just Damn!

Well worth the money.  Even $700!  :)

I'm a supervisor for a custom home builder and my Palm M505 IS my toolbelt.  Contacts, appointments, punch lists, change orders, time sheets, to do lists, things to ask homeowner, architect, you name it.  I run several jobs and of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.  This sucker keeps you organized and up to date.  It also reminds me of appts by beeping/vibrating and I hotsync it to my computer every night and it automatically downloads the weather forecast.  I'd be lost without it.
