We recently purchased a house that we are slowly updating. The bedrooms are thin wood paneling that were painted by the previous owner. We removed some shelves from one of the bedrooms and the paint began to peel a lot in pretty large pieces. I want to fill the seams with joint compound and repaint for a smooth surface. Is it ok to peel what will peel, sand the entire room, and then paint over the paint leftover? or will I be better off stripping the entire room and starting from scratch? I want this to be a permanent fix so I want to do it the right way. Any suggestions appreciated!
Also, if stripping is my best option, any recommendations on the best way to do that would be great!

I can think of 2 reasons that the paint is peeling, poor surface adhesion (maybe not using an appropriate primer) or moisture migrating from behind because of poor air sealing. If it’s the 1st I could see it being salvageable with a proper primer, if it’s the 2nd you’ll see the same peeling. I don’t know where you live so it’s hard to know if any moisture would migrate inbound.
We live in Mississippi. I didnt even consider humidity.
The right way is to pull that paneling off the wall. Make sure exterior walls are well insulated, and hang drywall.
