Not a big gadget fan, but have found two painting tools that really are worth paying for.
First one is the Pelican by Wooster, a handheld roller tray/paint bucket that’s got a magnet in the back to hold your brush, just the thing for trim and such. Ya kinda jamb your hand in and a strap wraps around the back. Pretty cool.
The other one is Frogtape. I asked the paint store guys about it and they said it definately had some fans among their customers. It’s dang spendy, about $5 with discount, so I wouldn’t use it everywhere, but thought I’d give it a try.
I brushed all the trim on the Forever Garage prior to spraying walls, taped casings off with this stuff and am truely amazed at the crisp line it left…no bleed…none! This after one coat oil primer, two coats acrylic and back rolling. I’m sold. I’d still cut in with brush for many things, but for the right app, this stuff rocks!
Included big pic of tape pulloff if you’re not limited in bandwidth.
Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.

I've heard good things about that frog tape, but I haven't tried it yet. My regular paint store doesn't carry it, but then they often seem to lag behind on a lot of new products.
About that pelican pail... is it good for a 4" roller? Right now when I want to use a 4" roller only, I've been using small plastic trays so I don't waste as much paint as a standard 9" roller tray would. The small trays work fine, but they're not particularly easy to hold, at least not without spilling some paint.
I do have the large version of the Handy Paint Pail (http://www.handypaintpail.com/2.11_hpp-pro.html), but it's just a bit larger than I really need for a 4" roller.
I've used it with a 4" roller, both weenie (Whizz) and regular diameter, a little bit of a mixed bag. Regular roller frame can hook over edge so you can use other hand without dunking it. Downside is the angle of the "ramp". Load roller by dipping knap into paint, but gravity wants it to stay dipped side down, so you kinda have to skate it down the ramp to rotate to unloaded part of roller....is that clear as mud?
Weenie roller loads easier, but no place to hook the one I have, so I snagged it between my fingers on bucket holding hand to go up and down ladder.
Brush is it's sweetest app, roller secondary.
Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end.

Got it, thanks.
Home Depot carries it butnot Lowes I do IIRC.
I just bought one of those pelican buckets. I really like it.

I've got something similar to the Pelican....not intended for rollers though....just the brush.
Love the way it straps onto my hand, and the magnetic hold for the brush is great.
But what do you do with the roller when cutting in?

Two ways I've found, pictures easier than descriptions :) This works OK, handle flops around some, but pretty secure.

This way wedges handle between fingers. Although it looks awkward, it's surprisingly comfortable because of captive hand.

You can do the frog tape thing by laying a roll of your favorite masking on its side and rubbing the side of a candle over the side of the roll. Just enough wax transfers to the edge and when you pull the tape off, no bleed through.

I just read that in the mag, I think....or somewhere. Have you tried it? I'm a little hesitant to get wax around surfaces I'm fixing to paint, but would give it a try.

I just tried it in my workshop as a test before I go into the guest apartment I'm doing. Worked great. I saw the tip in a mag and tried it....The unspoken word is capital. Thanks for the info on the tape!
All of my brushes have stainless steel ferruls, though, so the magnet won't help.

Really, what kind of brushes?
I wondered about the copper ferrules on a couple of my Purdy brushes, must be plating 'cuz they stick!

That bucket is much nicer than the rubbermaid version. That damm Rubbermaid version is a PIA to clean out cause it's got a rubber molding along the top.The Wooster one is a lot easier to clean and has a more comfortable handle.JT

Nice ones... had 'em all for over 10 years.
