Pennsylvania Contractor Law

Jake0358 | Posted in Business on June 23, 2009 06:33am

Contractors in PA: Your home address will be public information!

Short overview:
New Pa. law – Contractors have to be registered with the state.
– If no business address then it requires disclosure of your home address

Response: Contact your state Representative and Senator and complain.
Find them at: www.legis.state.pa.us/cfdocs/legis/home/find.cfm

Why: What about the security of your family, home, tools, right to privacy, etc.?

See attachment for more info.

Lemme get this right.  You want to be so under-the-radar as to be just a guy in a truck with a cell phone you got at Wal-Mart, that came with some minutes?

      Jake0358:

I'm not looking to be "under the radar" at all. I've always had auto, business, and workmans compensations insurance, as well as having the appropriate licenses and permits. In addition, I have a business phone and have been working in the same area for 25 years. Also, I have no problem being listed with a government agency, I just don't want to get my tools and/or truck ripped off.

Can you not use a PO box?

          Jon,

No you cannot list a PO BOX. Has to be a physical address. If you don't have a business address, then you must list your home address.

I would guess that the requirements are just the cost of doing business.Do you have a Mailboxes etc. near you?http://www.mbe.com/ps/ms.html

I'm not 100% on this but you may be able to use a CROP (Commercial Registered Office Provider).

I know nothing about that law. But, in suspect that the law is requiring a physical address where a summons can be filed. For corporations that usually a registered agent. Not always at the company location. But a physical address where you can filed a law suite. And if the corp does not keep that location current and they served, but don't know it they lose by default..

I have read through most of the 14 pages the PA atty gen has at the website, and while I can see what is required of a contractor to REGISTER, I cannot see where the CONSUMER can get your home address by inquiring.

If you are a partner in an LLC, you have to provide your home address, SS#, and more, for your firm to be registered.  That certainly does not mean that a consumer has access to that information.

          Gene_Davis,

Look at the attachment that I provided. It shows the section where that information is available. I put it in bold print.
