I have been asked to install a Pergola over a deck where I am replacing the boards (w/synthetics). There are two walls of the house to use and I am going to install new, taller 4×4 posts to support the other two. There are gutters up that the HO wants to save. I am thinking about using ledger boards (correct term I hope) screwed into the existing studs over the siding, or should I remove enough siding to fasten them directly.
I welcome any suggestions on other ways to do this, please?

think about 6x6 as the outer posts and make sure they go thru the deck to a footing on the ground..
this will give them some stability to reisist racking
the house connection should be lagged into the framing and flashed into the siding
if this is a miniscule pergola.. you micht be able to take some liberties..
the 4x4 will probably support it , but they often LOOK spindley and out of proprtion
