How costly have the permit fees become in your area?
I just permitted a large addition and the fees averaged $1 per sq ft! With the permit, $1,100. and the engineered plans $4k, we are over $5k just for paperwork. That same permit two years ago before the County had to secure more funds from less work would have cost me around $350.
Now they are a part of the job and all but no wonder so much unpermitted work is done with the cost just to be legal and legit running quite high.
Homewoners can’t believe it when you tell them it costs so much.

Hah! $1.00/SF?
Schools here now have the option to charge up to $1/SF. Not all are on board yet. But it won't be long.
Park fees vary. Lowest I've heard is about 2K. Up to 7-8K
Sewer/water used to be the big one. I know there is a big jump in water if you go up to 1" lines
I'm guessing 20k would cover most SDCs
edit:
this is new construction. I just saw yours is an addition. No idea on that

I just spent $450 for a $30k remodel. Here they base the permit fees on the cost of the project, so of course when you are asked from the inspector about the project costs you always low-ball.

Permit fees here are based on standard figures per square foot of X, Y, and Z. The issuing authority doesn't ask you what it's going to cost.
I recently finished a bathroom remodel. The room was about 11' x 11'. Total cost was about 13K. Permits were $216.00
Where: Indianapolis
What: 2,100 sq. ft. gut and rehab
Permits required: Drainage, Improvement Location Permit, Plumbing, HVAC, Electrical, Structural
All fees said and done: $1000.00
And the M, E & P values were based on system install cost. Don't remember about the DRN, ILP, and Structural.
About $.48 / sq. ft. which still isn't cheap. And for what? A 30 yr. old inspector and his lackey to tell me (Licensed Architect) what was right and wrong. Ha! Boy do they love fire caulk though. Fire caulk fixes everything : )

I just looked and the basic building permit is up $10 from last year but most of the other permits are the same. They do add up pretty quickly tho.

Built a house with 5,200 SF (3,200 finished) last year.
$2,800 permit costs, $5,200 impact fees.

I am just finishing up a remodel that ran 120k. Permits are based upon cost of the job and came to almost 5000.00.
A permit to build a new single home only runs around 650.00.
The homeowner took this issue up with the local council and was told to do his project while they review the fee structure to make it more fair.
That was in June of 2008, and we still do not know what the final permit cost will be.
