Photo Documentary Threads

homedesign | Posted in Photo Gallery on September 19, 2007 10:59am

Please place a link (with brief description) here to all old photo documentary styled threads

This thread is a “work in progress” or “under construction” …right now we are using this as a collection bucket for old threads that show a series of photos related to a phase of construction or a “whole house” series

the plan is to organize the photo gallery so that it may become easier to navigate

suggestions for categories and how to organize are also welcome here

it seems we are limited to “thread navigation”

      that's funny ...

I forgot I posted all that.

anyways ... since then ... I learned how to add the pics into the post ...

so I went back and added them all for easier reading.

wow ... a blast from the past!

That's why I was asking you a few weeks back how come we ain't getting pics anymore.

one big reason is one of the little pins where the mem card slides in on my $800 Nikon is bent ... and I've been using the little $70 "throw in the purse" cam I got for my wife!

and she's got this goofy pic program to download that I hate ... cause it's damn near impossible to just download and put in "my pics" ...

she's got some deal there that keeps trying to sell me copies from their website first.

which is fine for pics of the kids we want to share ...

but sucks for a million and one job site pics.

gotta get my cam to Ritz ... get back on track.

sounds like Kodak easy share...horrible is being nice.

Just insert the mem card or cable hook up usb, and choose to open with something else..like MS photo editor, then dump all into a MyPics folder, and then resize with Irfan from there, and save in documents..works for me.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

I worked for years just fine with the Nikon stuff ...

she decided she wanted to use ... think it's Snapfish?

we run XP ... my side ... her side ...

I finally deleted it all from my side.

What I'd done is hit the back 50 tab in Photo Gallery like a couple dozen times till I reached the beginning of the internet and when the puter started smoking quickly fast forwarded to the earlist of the Photo Gallery threads in something like 2002 and started roaming from there.

Shame those earlymost threads had the attachments deleted during the move as some sounded pretty interesting.

Rez, that sounds good to me...maybe after we see what comes in then they can be broken into categories

I would like to see one category that is "whole house start to finish"

Here is one of my favorite "off-site" documentaries...suggest by Catspawhttp://imageevent.com/okoboji_images/deloreshouse?n=121&z=2&w=0&x=0&c=4&m=24&p=120

pick the "show all" button when you get there"Delores House" is the work of Rollie Peschon

I am going to dig up the JLC link for the Tim Uhler project also.

This could take a while ... wide open for suggestions

Sounds like maybe separate titled summary threads  under the 'Photo Gallery' folder might work.

A lot of good stuff floating around back there but so hard to get to under the present software system.

Most folk and particularly the newbies are never going to set sail for those unchartered waters although there have been numerous inquiries that get posted asking how to find certain things or ways to get back into the archives.

Yes, a big project but with people assisting a little here a little there it can be pulled off and BT will be all the better for it.

This project will go a long ways towards providing easy access to those old posts.

            be an akashic record.

        Ladyfire and all others,

thanks for all the links...I was out of town all day..nice surprise

LadyFire (and others) I would like any help you can offer with this project.

Ideas about organizing would be great.

My first goal is to locate all the documentary type threads that would show a complete house construction process...similar to Mike Smiths current photo thread.

But actually organizing and labeling any "construction phase" process threads would be useful.

I have found it difficult to locate things in the current gallery. I am open to ideas.

Links to other sites (JLC ...photo sharing sites yada..yada)that document construction series could be just as valuable.

        thanks ..John Brooks

I understand what you're wanting now and will be more than happy to help in any way that I can.  I will look at some of the documentary photos tomorrow.

Though, I will have to get some help from Rez on how to post the link. The ones I found today won't open.My brain + his brawn = a perfect team

          1. rez | Sep 21, 2007 09:05pm | #23

What I've been doing is a copy/paste from the thread number found in the upper right corner of the post and pasted in the new post.

That should transfer the actual link so the post can be opened from the link you supplied in that new post here.

Thanks Rez. I posted some already. But they show the complete link. I will try again. Do you have to go back into your specific post and edit to add a link each time?

How do I get several links into one post without editing it 100 times is what I'm trying to ask.My brain + his brawn = a perfect team

          3. rez | Sep 22, 2007 12:08am | #31

you keep adding links and I'll never get around to answering yer question! :o)

What I do is open a reply page here on this thread and have another BTwindow open that I can roam around thru the posts and threads in till I see a worthy candidate.

Then I left click and hold then scroll over the upperright corner post # which highlights it to blue.

Then right click which opens the window menu and leftclick on 'copy' then left click back to the reply page and right click to open the menu window again and left click on 'paste' which deposits the copied post number link in the reply letter.

be I think I got that right

          Rez,

maybe there could be a "master thread" that could point to different category threads

in the same format as you did with the Radford book link and the thumbnail

          whole house

          framing only

          insulation

          floors...yada yada

          1. rez | Sep 24, 2007 06:10pm | #42

            I can see that.

One original post that acts as an index containing a link to each different category which is it's own individual thread of whatever topic designation,

those designated threads which can be added to or edited as needed without ever needing to touch the original index post except to add a new link to a new category.

Yep, I think that is the way to go with it.

            Anyone have any other ideas?

            Anyone have any other ideas?

I sure don't!   That sounds like a good one to me though. Would definitely make keeping track of each particular category easier. My brain + his brawn = a perfect team

I haven't tried it yet.  Had a stack of jobs to line up starring me in the face this morning.  When I get these scheduled, I will try it.

This may have already been mentioned and I didn't see it, but I think you need to see if Taunton can make the index a "sticky" so it's always at the top of the photo gallery section.

            Good point.

Let's see what homedesign wants to do.

Seems like project time. View Image>

          7. homedesign | Sep 24, 2007 07:43pm | #48

            Jon,

I did not know that was an option...but it sounds good.

What else is possible with Prospero?

I am thinking that it may be better for someone like Rez (or if there is another part-time fulltimer) post the "master thread" so that they will have the editing privelages for the "master Index"

I am getting ready to hit the road and may not have internet at my budget motel so I may not have any comments for a few days

          8. rez | Sep 24, 2007 07:52pm | #50

It'll be alright for you to make a link post whenever it seems time.

This should be a lengthy project that will move along whenever people have the time and gumption to keep adding to it

and in the event you take on a 3 year job in backwoods Siberia with no internet service someone would be able to copy/paste the post of links on to a new post so all is well.

I'm hoping SamT's draftcard is in the single digits so maybe we can talk him into setting up the index once the bulk of old threads gets centralized on this thread:o)

edited to add I see SamT is already on the move in the formation of the designated thread in 94969.1 and it looks a good process.

I assume you are volunteering to moderate this organization.

Since we must use "Thread Navigation" and 20 posts are shown on a page, I suggest that you start a new thread and make 20 posts to it before anyone else does. That would be your Index page. Since all the posts on the Index page would be yours, you can update (edit) them as needed.

You might want to get a new user name just for this so you can pass the flag when you get tired of moderating. Maybe share it with Luka and Rez :)

This system does limit you to 20 major categories, but you don't have to label all of them at the beginning. I would suggest that you use post #1 as a table of contents referencing the other 19 posts and their secondary categories.

Navigation: The HTML code for a link is '<A Href="Place to go">Link Words</A>' without the single quotes. "Link Words" will be underlined and blue.

To navigate to a place on the same page, you need a named Anchor. That code is '<P><A Name="#NameWord"></A></P>'.You choose any "NameWord" you like. NameWord is invisible on the viewed page. The <P> Tags insure that any text that follows the named Anchor will not be lost in the top border of the page. Clicking on "Linked Words" will put the invisible "NameWord" Anchor at the top of the view.

Let's say that your TOC has a section, (1 of the twenty posts you first made,) Tutorials, with subsections Framing, Roofing, and Whole House. The HTML code to make the words "Whole House" in the TOC clickable and bring the Whole House index to the top of the screen is:

    In the TOC;

<A Href="#NameWord">Whole House</A> A thread by Joe Blow from Excavating the Foundation to Turn key.

    In the Index post;

    <P><A Name="NameWord"></A></P>
<P>(Link to thread here): Blah Blah Blah...
<P> Another link to another thread. Blah....

Knowing the crowd here, you better use your first post to explain what you are doing and that you need the first 20 posts and ask that no one post until you've done the 20.

Even then you'll have to work fast. The fastest way to make a new post is to post a space+enter in the text box. IOW, as soon as the text box shows, click it, hit the spacebar then the Enter key, then hit the Post button. This will give you an empty post you can edit as needed.

I looked at your guys' links and you are missing some of the best craftmanship I have ever seen.  Look for anything by Riverman,  his photo threads are excellent and the results are even better.

I will look up Riverman. Let me know if you think of anyone else.

I hope to work on the Index this weekend.

His curved shoe moulding thread was another good one.

Another is his columns that he makes in his shop.

        Just incredible work.

Anyone able to take on the '05 PhotoGallery threads in similar manner?

I figure I can handle the rest of '03 and the '04s but there's a lot of threads in there

and believe it or not there is life outside of BT.

Hey, Rez..I see that you are already plugging stuff into the contents thread...so maybe the bucket will not be needed.

            Rez,

I am trying to think of a way I can help without duplicating what you are doing.

What if I started rounding up all the threads that you did not post.

            Does that make sene?

            Ya, makes sense.

Well, you could start in the PhotoGallery '07 threads and work back thru till we meet in the middle somewhere if that fits. I'm somewhere in the '04s right now. Then I think there will be quite a few threads in the General Discussion.

I did a test drive in the Index with some flooring threads and messed it up by placing them in a Salvaged Floor category but I'm learning.

It might help clarify the process if we could get the various headings and subheadings listed in the Index Thread so some threads can go ahead and be placed permanent there from this collective thread we are in now.

I'd do it but I am puterchallenged and would have to learn everything as first time thru with time consumed when someone else could do it quick.

Stairways, Wood Flooring, Tile, Plumbing, Cabinetry, Shelving, House Documentary, Framing, Baths, Kitchens...etc... that sort of thing.

Anyone who can pitch in some time is appreciated.

Hopefully by summer they'll be a functioning Photo Index.

be in the summertime when the weather is fine...

Stairways, Wood Flooring, Tile, Plumbing, Cabinetry, Shelving, House Documentary, Framing, Baths, KitchensThat's ten. If you and Homie can come up with the 19 headings you want, I'll set them up.If you know what sub headings, I can do them too. I would paste links in, but I have to do everything with code cuz I'm using Firefox.SamT

Sam, thanks...sounds good ...that will really help.

I am puterchallenged more than Rez.

I was thinking we should just consolidate what we already have. It is hard for me to navigate thru all the threads (in this thread)and sort out what's already here.

We need to isolate/consolidate the photo links from all the other discussion.

that's what I was tring to do with that bucket idea ... but did not make myself clear.

maybe we need a fresh thread?

Rez, I will try to contact you later by email and explain myself better.

If we get the Index subject catagories set up I can copy/paste those threads from my searchings in this thread into those Indexlisted folders ok

then some fine tuning can always be incorporated in the Index later as needed and time presents.

Maybe even place a thumbnail sampler photo next to some thread links like a little minipic of a StanFoster spiral staircase just for the jazz. snorK*

            Rez, Good ideas.

I like vintage house photos also ...especially the ones that show during construction. Did David Doud say there were more in the Archives?

Have not been here in a while, stumbled upon this thread while checking out who was still alive and kicking in Breaktime. Thanks guys for bring up my posts. Somewhere in the archives are 70866.1 free forming a handrail and 78795 cherry birdseye maple columns, two of my favorite photo projects. Hope all you guys are doing well.

yes, I believe there are a number of his different posts back there somewhere consisting of interesting old photos.

We'll find it sooner or later.

How about Stairways w/subcategory StanFoster, Wood Flooring, Tile, Plumbing&Mechanicals, Cabinetry w/subcategory of Shelving, House Documentary, Framing, Baths, Kitchens, Decks, Doors&Windows, and Historic Photos, for starters?

Can this all be changed around, added to and finetuned later as we see how this operation will run?

I reformatted it to, IMO, better fit the way you guys work the cut and paste.http://forums.taunton.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=tp-breaktime&msg=94969.1SamT

It's all yours now. It's good to see that only one of us can log in as Modder at one time. It'll keep us from stepping on each others edits.Y'all might want to edit out the edit logging as you go, else you wind up with a long list of "edited by Modder on blah blah"SamT

Delete what's there and repaste the info back in. It's just text, no html, links, formatting, whatever. That will all get pasted back in when you redo it.SamT

            Yep, that was me. snorK*

I shrank down the font, moved them over half dozen spaces and colored them maroon once I placed them in the Index.

I got to thinking maybe we should save the listed posts somewhere off the site in the event some type of accidental erasing occurs.

Man, that would be a bummer to lose all that work.

Haven't gone over to see what Sam did yet.

Been on a full workload for a bit of late but should be able to knock out some more here shortly.

In the event anyone reading this wants to help out, no one has started the old General Discussion threads yet and I know there is a slew of photo posts that made it there in years gone by.

Help? Sure, we'll take all the help we can get.

ya know, this Index is going to be a big plus for the wellbeing of the forum. A lot of great stuff buried back in there that never sees the light of day.

Rez, Did you ever figure how to make the contents thread "sticky" like Jon suggested?

          36. rez | Oct 09, 2007 10:35pm | #116

No, that would have to come down from corporate headquarters and I'm guessing they'd want stock options first.

            Rez,

Just so you know I think I have all the thread suggestions(before 116) that you did not mine consolidated into 116. One step at a time.

I know that some will need to be reformated. Contents thumbnail is looking good.

            homie-

I think I just found a way to more easily access all those ancient threads you said you wanted to know a way to get into awhile back.

            Can you dig it?

            Can you see it?

Might make the Photo Index unneeded.

be of the people, for the people

            A portal has been opened.

BT will never be the same again.

            Breaktime Wormholes!

            Rez??Has anyone seen Rez?

One minute he was here...and then he vanished.

Breaktime turned into a snake that started feeding on itself. An endless loop of ones and zeros.

            Rez,

How'd you do dat? Nobody has ever looked behind the mushrooms or gone down that green pipe before. Did you see Luigi in there?

Maybe you can find a way to jump to the last post?

Are you playing with fire?...do you think you might crash breaktime?

All it takes is a lone pioneer to brave the depths of 'Next 50' long enough to record caches along the way before arrival to the ooze.

Water and food tin rations along with an ample amount of fuel to supply the fellow pilgrims sustenance for their journeys is now all that is needed as the wormhole openings have been found to really exist.

What amazes me is the fact that those in charge of BT had access to providing something of this nature all along but instead chose to let those thousands of threads lie dormant for the most part outside of whatever morsels could be salvaged via the search function.

            The shame, the shame.

Oh well, looks like it's up to we the people again to develop a program helping launch the BT astronaut miners.

You know, I lost exact count but it was over 200 next 50 clicks to reach that first 2002 Construction Techniques post so one really doesn't want to have to endure that again.

Who knows how many it might take to map out the more prominent General Discussion folder.

We need volunteers to man those exploratory ships.

What's really criminal about the whole thing that probably one hour spent by a BT Prospero programer behind the scenes could develop the whole thing with a lot better precision and have this baby up and running, accessible to all, and controls set for the heart of the sun making this place burn all the richer.

Here's a couple references to Boogerin' from early 1999 but that's the earliest the search shows.

I'm certain that the "boogerin' with blue" thread took place in the fall of 1999.I remember because that's when I took my first AutoCAD class and I recall using "Alt+Tab" to go back and forth from the thread and my CAD screen. At least I'm pretty sure I'm right.

Remember when I said that I'm pretty sure I was right?

            Well I was wrong.

It was not 1999, it was 2000.

In fact, I found the thread boogerin' with Blue. Don't get too excited, though. It's only the first post for some reason. Kinda like a fleeting glance at the girl you should have asked to dance, but instead you let her walk away.

I also found this post from Blue that alludes to the Boogerin' house, but it's just informational.

Finally, I found a thread entitled who fathered 'Breaktime'?. I'm sure you remember this thread. Maybe some interesting perspective is in there, but I haven't waded through all the posts.

That's ok, all is one on this thread.

homedesign has accepted the responsibility as moderator of the photo index thread 94969.1, now under construction, of which this thread is acting as the collection site work station of old photo posts to be included in the ongoing process of being integrated into the index as time permits.

Any old photo posts you know of that can be placed here is appreciated.
