A question for the dialup patrons of Breaktime.
What size recommendation would you request pics posted here to be to allow you to download the pic without having to wait the minutes to see the photo?
There must be a balance for download time and pic clarity in there somewhere.

50k

75 to a hundred is fine with me.

I download them up to about 250 to 300k.
After that, I just say forget it, unless it promises to be something really good.
It takes 4 to five minutes to download 250k. That is five minutes in which everything else is either really slow, or just totally useless.
In cyber time, that is a lifetime...

Keep it under 2 mb.
Oh sorry, was that gloating?

Around 100K is fine with me. More if it's something special, like the group shot from the last BT fest.
BTW - I really do appreciate you re-sizing all those pics fo us dial-upers.
That "bump" thing I'm not so sure about....(-:
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Say you dialyps get a jpg pic attachment of 200KB.
How much download time is needed to open it up as opposed to say 50 KBs?
I'm on dial-up at 28.8, and that's no picnic when it comes to pictures.
AndyC's thread was available, so I opened this:
http://forums.taunton.com/n/mb/at.asp?webtag=tp-breaktime&guid=A4DF2029-D087-4552-8C0E-5A0722BF06F5&frames=no
I opened the pic three times, it's a reasonably sized attachment, listed at about 90kb and 320 x 240 pixels. It took my 'puter 26, 25, and 26 seconds to download. I have a fairly fast P4 machine, maybe 6 months old.
There's no reason that kb-wise pics can't be 50-75kb, and size-wise (pixels), what Luka said.

So at 50 KB that pic should take approx. 14 seconds to download?
Download rates can vary for myriad reasons.
I suppose that if you have true 50kbs, then a 200kb pic should take 4 seconds to download and a 50kb pic should only take 1 second for you, just under two for me with my 28.8 rate.
For example, Andy's 90kb pic should have taken 3 seconds at my 28.8 rate, but it took <yawn> nine times as long as it should have.
Rates do vary and for a host of reasons. Not sure if it has to do with how much of taunton's allocated bandwidth is being used, for example...plus, I need to get into the settings on my desktop. I could stand to sanitize things a bit and I bet that'll make my machine run faster.
Maybe I'll try later tonight after the Pats game.
Edit: talking about different rates...I just went to Andy's pic that I linked to in the previous post. This time the download times were about 3-4 seconds each time I clicked on the link.

" This time the download times were about 3-4 seconds each time I clicked on the link."That is because your PC had it already in the temp files of the internet folder. It recognized that the information was already available on your HD and let you see that image while it continued checking

No worries, I was just yanking on your leg a bit.And yep, I have enough trouble keeping track of all the new threads, never mind having the old ones resurrected!

Ahhh, the things I do fer youse guys.
2.bmp is the original. I just grabbed the first bmp that I saw.
2.jpg was concerted with PSP3 set at 72DPI and 50% compression.
ACDC2.jpg was converted with ACDSee at 65% compression.
small2.jpg was reduced to 430x320 in PSP3 then saved at the same settings as above.
All right. For some reason, I can't upload the BMP file. Anyway, it's also 640x480, but 921kb in size.

Reason for the inquiry as to download speeds for dialups is wanting to make 'A Public Awareness' announcement to all whom it may concern regarding the excessive amount of time it takes dialups to download the 200 to 300+ KBs.
Thinking perhaps seeing the minutes involved for dialups to view a pic from a cable-dsl'er that takes them 1 to 2 seconds might sway some to take the time to resize the pics prior to posting.
Excessive size KBs can minimize participation in a thread in the event of a query.
Just a thought...
but whadda I know, ya know.
Well, I really appreciate all the re-sizing you have been doing with your scisors, Rez.
when a phot os slightly over 100, I hesitate and spend a second or two decidiign whether it looks likely to be worth the wait, depending on comments from others. At 250 size, I won't bother unless it is really boring here and there are lots of positive comments about it. By reading or scrolling down the thread, sometimes I see your resized version first. I have downloaded five hundred before on a slow night when I am working on SP plans too or if i feel like playing a game of Freecell while it downloads

It'd be a nice thing for all to regulate the size of their uploads.
Too often I'll click on an attachment, then close it within 5-10 seconds if it looks to be a slow one.
I've tried "opening in a new window" and surfing on, but the download-in-progress bogs down the attempt at the surf-while-you-wait feature. Now I just close the download and move on to another thread.
Good idea, though.
On my dialup, I figure it takes about a full minute to download a 100k file.
Sometimes more, as they will hang up and I'll have to re-start it. But this is a REALLY lousy connection...If we don't have a right to act according to our religious belief by forming judgments according to those beliefs about human conduct and behavior, then, exactly what does the free exercise of religion mean? Ya, we use the Modder handle when working on the Photo Index mining out the gold back there
and sometimes come across interesting threads still valid enough for a bump from obscurity.

I just tried that photo and it took 21 seconds. But a lot of factors can change that such as whether I am on laptop wireless link or if I have other tabs open and active, and what condition the phone line is in. For instance, there is a lot of stattic on the line lately due to wet storms.

I'm on DU at 45333 bits/sec and it took 18, 19, and 20 seconds.
