I’ve got a job where a homeowner wants a newly installed raw white oak floor pickled so that it is similar to the existing finished and previously pickled floor. The only catch is that they want the new floor finished with water based finish instead of the oil based finish used 25 years ago which is yellowing. Ultimately the old section will be refinished so an exact match isn’t critical. The floor finisher is struggling with what pigmented white stain product to use beneath water based urethane. There has been discussion of bleaching prior to staining with a special 2 component bleach.
Anyone have any thoughts ?

The part wood bleach removes all color. Give you a sun bleached bones look. I used it once on an ash table top. Need some more wood and the extra that I got was so much different than what I had that I had to bleach it all and then stain and dye it.
I think that white latex paint can be used for the pickling stain.
.
A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
i've done a little pickled oak... the last was a countertop edging
used an exterior latex "navajo white"
and finish was poly

met with the owner this morning, looked at the original floors in the home. they were obviously bleached when they were done by the previous owner many years ago.
that looks like the route we will go for the next round of samples. bleach followed by an oil based pickling stain followed by water based poly.
