opinions? I would hope for opinions from those experienced with BOTH materials.
Any thoughts on the use of 1 x 6 tongue and groove boards with a v-groove detail at teh joints to be used for soffits? Nailing would be 14 oc under the eaves and closer to 28 oc on teh gables (over hang is 30 inches). The stain would be semi-transparent or might even go solid, so consider that as to degree of moisture protection and the fact that other options somewhat limit the edge toward cedar for beauty..
So … cedar or pine? One contractor said pine is a problem.
Oh, location NW. Not coastal but inland NW (ie Norht Idaho). cold damp spring and falls, but not excessive.
Pine is cheap, but if cedar is the way to go then why not.
Thanks as always.

I can't really speak for your climate but my world t&g pine soffit will last about forever.
NC Arkansas, i.e. mid-south U.S.
Pine is fine...
Cedar would be great, but pine is fine... one of the main reasons to pick cedar over pine would be for it's ability to perform in wet exposures...siding, shingles, etc. Under a soffit where there is minimal exposure to wet weather, pine will perform well.
That is what I would think ...
Yes, I would thihk pine woud be fine as well. Can not for the life of me figure out why the contractor-type-guy said to use cedar? And for teh record he was not in the running for any job from me so his motives were pure.
Any thouhgts as to how either material would stand up to nailing on the gables with a span of 29 or so inches? Sagging? And some T&G is not a full 3/4 inch which might mean sagging? ?????
