OK… When I flush the head in my shop for the last year or so, the pipes howl and hammer unbelievably. You can literally hear it in the street, a good 75 feet away. Sounds like the roof is going to come down. Told the landlord about it and he said I have something leaning against the pipes… huh?
By far the loudest I’ve ever heard. Ideas?

Most likely a bad flush valve.
But it also could be a stop valve with a loose washer, but they usally make a lower pitch sound.
.
A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
What Bill said -- almost. I'd say a bad FILL valve. Install a Fluidmaster replacement kit in the toilet, if it's not some oddball design. So easy even an engineer can do it.Can also be a bad pressure regulator somewhere.

Hmmmmmmmmmm... never heard a flush valve (or any valve) make this decibel level (it's literally painful) but I'll take a look. Thanks Bill...PaulB
The valve is acting like the reed in a clarinet. Only unfortunately the kid playing it just got his first lession this morning.

I just dealt with a similar problem . After a bath renovation the pipes started banging and of course I thought I'd screwed something up. Looked up water hammer online and found out that incresad pressure causes it. Sure enough the pressure test was over 100psi. Funny thing was they didn't have a regulator and it was town water. A regulator was installed as well as an arrestor and it took care of it.
