I’ve been researching thinkness planers for awhile to eventually purchase one. I’ve noticed some planers look pertty much identical. Are some of these planers made in the same factory and just decorated differently?
Two planers I had a chance to look at recently were manufactured by King Industrial and General International. Their 20″ planer looks identical but there is a $750 price difference! Hopefully something inside the machine is different, anyone know for sure and is it worth the extra $750.
Does anyone have any experience with these two planers?
Any recommendations for good planers?
20″ overkill? Maybe 15″ will do?
I will only be using the machine on a part time basis, mostly hobby work, but don’t want to have to buy another one down the road because I didn’t spend enough to get a decent one.
Thanks for your input in advance,
kev

You might get a better response by posting this over at FWW. I had the Ryobi 10" for several years, and it dod ok. I am on my second Rigid 12" (or is it 13"?) and it also works well. The first Rigid would not hold a thickness setting and the head wouldn't lock so I could change the blade, but HD swapped it at about a year. The current one is about 2 yrs old. For this size planer, I'm happy with the rigid, based on cutting width, portability, cost.
