Ok Maybe I should have put this in the tools one , but oh well here we go.
I was curious if you could turn an ac or dc welding machine into a plasma cutter.
I know if I crank up my ac all the way with my tig torch on it it will cut per say but it’s ugly & mostly uncontrollable.

wow i just posted about how i just used my plasma cutter today for the first time in over 2 yrs... was very happy i had it... i use to use a carbon arc torch with my craftsman 225 buzz box welder when i was a kid... only thing it was better than was a hacksaw

Oh so true
I grabbed my shops portable plasma cutter to cut some 3/16 silicon bronze for my exhaust hood this weekend.
I have always had a cutting torch, but now most of the metal I use at home instead of iron is stainless, brass, aluminum, copper,& silicon bronze.
I have an ac/dc welder with tig attachments, & having blown through metal with the tig turned up to high I was wondering if there was a way to build one.
The small "hobby arc 2000" which is what we call them at work isn't really big enough for what I have plans for most of the time, & didn't want to drop a few thousand on a nice big miller or a hobart. When asked why is there four engines on a 747------ "cause we couldn't fit six" a Boeing engineer
i think the one i have is a pro-tec ? says it will cut 1/2" mild steel... think it listed for $2600 and i got it off line rebuilt for under 1k... i had a small import unit that was only good for sheet metal and i always had problems with the tips... looking back it might have been i didn't dry the air enough... when i finish my loft project and get my shop set up I'll venture into the land of TIG.... love seeing a pretty weld...

I don't know anything about making one...but I bought a Miller Spectrum 375 a while back in almost new, mint condition for $900.
That thing will make a hairline cut on 99% of the metal I normally work with. I don't know how I ever got along without it. I haven't fired up the torch to cut anything since I got it.
That kind of money is chicken feed to you plumbers :) ! I'd keep my eye out for a good used one or spring for a new one. The 375 is about $1300 new around here.
You can always find some way to justify a new tool.
