I’ve a current customer (from hell but thats another story) interested in real plaster over sheet rock. My specialty is old house repair and budget restoration & I’ve done more rooms of taping than I care to confess, and tons of plaster molds (another story) anyone out there with experience in real plastering? basic tips, materials etc. I work in a rural area where It’s necessary to where many hats thanks!

I don't know much, but I'm pretty sure you can not put real plaster over ordinary sheet rock.

*There was a recent discussion on this, and someone mentioned a bonding agent or some such. I'd give the link, but the search feature isn't working at the moment. Search on drywall and plaster when they're done indexing the search.
*you sound like a good trowel man..as such.. you'd love skim caot plasteruse a blueboard base (gypsum with a special coating to RETARD the absorption of water out of the plaster)use a fiberglass mesh tape.. & scratch coat for all joints..then your skimcoat..Diamond is more forgiving than Imperial...if you already have the sheetrock.. talk to your plaster supplier about a coating agent to prep the surface..
*What, you don't like drywall?? Anyway, yes, you can plaster over normal drywall, though blue board is preferable. Just use a bonding agent, and some people flip the drywall inside out to have the seemingly tougher backing paper facing out. Then apply the bonding agent and follow the instructions for the agent about when to plaster (usually when tacky). If veneering, go Mike's route with USG Diamond coat. If you want base coat and finish coat, use something like USG Red Top wood fiber plaster as a base, and Diamond as the finish coat. Check out http://www.oldhouseforums.net, choose "Old Forums (Read Only), and choose "Plaster/Drywall". Lots of good information on this site. Also that "other" magazine (JLC) used to have a free online article about skim-coat plastering, but now they charge you $5 to download it. Happy plastering.
