I am in the process of remodeling (3 years) my ranch house. I used 1/2 inch drywall and primed and painted with a latex based paint. My wife and I now would like to plaster the walls with plaster or a structolite finish (used in the Santa Fe N.M. area). Can this be done without any additional prep work or does anyone know what might be required for a good long lasting bond. I’ll be subing this out.
Thanks, Chris

Never tried it. Ususally one uses plaster over plaster board if not adobe. Plaster board has different paper. Causes the plaster to grip. My thinking would be that there's an adherence problem. Could always test, I suppose.
What you can do is use drywall mud. If she wants to use structolite, she then doesn't want a diamond finish....so you could achieve the same effect with dw mud. Or, Venetian Plaster will do nicely too. The drywallers down here are now offering a "plaster" finish. Skim coated with subtle trowel marks.

lay down a top coat or mud coat of stucco, we use Keim stucco called "universal render" then place fiberglass mesh into the stucco, then apply your second coat, then your finish coat. The fiberglass mesh rides over the surface, helps prevent cracks.
You do that over painted drywall?
You use stucco? Cement stucco indoors on painted drywall?
There are a few different brands of bonding adhesives made for this situation. On my own house I used Concrete bonding adhesive for this on the advice of an experienced plasterer. Its held up fine for about 7 years now. I'll add that I also cleaned the painted surfaces with TSP prior to that.

You can use plain old joint compound over the paint and it will stick just fine. We've done it for 30 years and never had a call back.
