I was looking for an new entry and used the Frypon set up for the engaged columns and header piece. But, then I needed some trim to fisnish out the door and the Frypon price for 1×4 was high — almost the price of gold; the salesman suggested I use some of the plastic wood (it is just like a PVC pipe but it is a 1×4) instead. Comes in all kinds of witdths and thincknesses and a few molded trim selections — like brick mold and ogee.
Since then, I have used this stuff in a lot of exterior places: cuts like wood, routs like wood, holds paint -especailly the cut areas. However, it has not shrunk, rotted, or bowed like some wood trim I have installed.
I am taking on a farily large siding job and am using Hardie Siding and would like to use this plactic stuff for trim in a few palces — more of an accent board. If you have never used it — the shaping and cutting with fancy detail and reveal is phenomnal — Its not dirt cheap but in the long run it probably is cheap — I figure it is $3/bf.
Anyone use this sort of PVC board and what kind of experience have you had?
Thanks — Dudley

Dudley... Sounds like you to have had the chance to work with the newer products on the market as well. I personally have worked with a frypon( I thought is was fypon?), and because the G.C.'s sales rep did not send him all the corresponding parts and more inportantly instructions , it worked out to be an adventure that I would not chose to do again. Working with the plastic exterior trim was also a experience I will not soon forget. I find that if you are gonna be working with these type of products its also good to learn how to work a lot of the new fillers, foams, and fiberglass as well. When you try to mix wood based products and knowledge with plastis trim, you get a lot of head scratching.
All in all if a costumer asked me to use this material in the future I would, personally you would not see these products on my house. When it comes down to cost is it comparible? Hope you all the luck in the world, if you learn any new tricks pass them on.
