We have a dining room size table top which is 9/16″ thick plate glass. A saucepan lid dropped on it somehow hit at an angle which caused one entire corner to snap off and shatter in a grand manner. My question is, is there a way to remove the damaged corner by cutting it off somehow and refinishing the new edge. We would end up with an almost square coffee table size piece of beautiful glass.

Plate glass is cut just like regular glass, although I've never worked with anything thicker than 1/4", so I can't speak from personal experience. The wheel on the tip of a glass cutter etches a tiny line, which creates a "stress-raiser". When force is applied, the glass will (usually) break cleanly along that line.
After that, edges are ground, etc., either with or without bevels.
It should be possible -- I'd call a local glass shop and ask them for a price.

Yes, it's entirely possible. I have cut and polished up to 3/4 inch plate. If a lot has to be taken off, there will be a risk of breakage, since the corners will have to be cut off and ground down, if its a small amount it will be simply ground off, which is less risky. There will be no guarantee by the glass house doing the work, since it's your glass.
Thank you for your replies. I am waiting until 9 this morning to call a nice local glass place that re-did a kitchen window for me (a hawk tried to fly through it). It sounds as if we might be able to save it, I would like to, it is a beautiful piece of glass.
